We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Angelia Hubbard. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Angelia below.
Angelia, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to go back in time and hear the story of how you came up with the name of your brand?
The name of my business is Three Little Lotus. I have three daughters and in looking up the meaning behind the lotus flower it all just felt right to put together. The meaning behind the lotus flower is purity, rebirth, and strength. When I was venturing out on my own as an independent contractor and then having my home studio it was a real restart for me as an instructor. I had been teaching for other people for almost 20 years and the time felt right to market myself and all I had to offer. I wanted to be in one space and not travel around to multiple studios teaching Pilates, Yoga, and Dance as well as be a role model for my girls as an entrepreneur and small business owner. Needless to say, using the word “lotus: was a perfect fit.
Angelia, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I have always been a mover. I studied dance and went to college to be a professional dancer. After a few years in college, it just didn’t work out so I went right into teaching dance and performing. I found Pilates in my early 20s and started regularly taking classes. I then became a fully certified Pilates Instructor. Alongside the Pilates, I also became a certified Yoga instructor. I have been teaching dance, Pilates, and yoga for almost 23 years. I am very much a “why’ person and I have found that my Pilates background has been such a valuable asset to my dance teaching and training. I am able to help other dancers understand body mechanics so much better as I’ve gained so much more anatomy knowledge. I am so fortunate to see a wide range of clients in my studio. I have clients who are dancers looking to improve their technique or returning from an injury as well as seniors who need movement to help them deal with their aging bodies as well as everyone in between.
I recently graduated with my bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science. I decided in 2020 at the age of 41 to go back and finally get that degree. I never would have thought to do a degree in Exercise Science when I was 18 but I am so happy this opportunity came around at this point in my life. I have such a different mindset about education this particular degree felt so appropriate for what I have been doing for the past 20+ years. I gained such a wealth of knowledge as well as adding Personal Trainer to my credentials.
I absolutely love what I do. I love helping people find movement in their own bodies and most importantly understand how their bodies work. I love helping those with injuries find healthier movement patterns so they can get back to what it is they love to do. I love helping clients that are super strong challenge themselves in ways they are not used to and I also love working with the dance community to give them a different perspective of how to train dancers safely in such a demanding art form.
Have you ever had to pivot?
I initially went to school to become a professional dancer. That was a very demanding and challenging field to get into. When I decided to pivot and take a break from college I went straight into teaching dance and performing. I had met my husband when I lived in NYC and he was from Bermuda. We ended up moving to Bermuda and while I was teaching and dancing there I was introduced to Pilates. I immediately loved how Pilates made me think about how the body moved as opposed to just moving it without thinking which I had been doing for so many years. Digging into Pilates gave me space to explore new ways of movement outside of dance and how to utilize it to keep me dancing and moving safely in my own body.
I have been helping other people find that same movement in their bodies for over 20 years now. When covid hit everything I was doing was so hands-on with clients and students. I had to immediately shift to virtual sessions and classes as so many did and it was an entirely new way of teaching. I had to imagine the body in front of me physically in front of me and then explain over a screen how to get them to feel and move in the way I wanted them to. I always thought I was good at cueing clients and students but teaching over virtual helped me really hone in on that aspect of my teaching. I had to really think about how each person in front of me learns best without me being right there with them and then convey that through my words. It was a great learning experience and I think only helped me to become a better teacher.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
As a young dancer, I grew up at a studio where I was supported and excelled. When I went off to college it was very challenging. The instructors were not always the nicest and could at times be pretty brutal in their critics of your body and dancing. It was tough as a young female to hear all the things that are wrong with what you are doing. I was even told a few times to consider another career and that dance wasn’t for me. I knew though that I loved the art of dance and I wanted to continue to do it no matter what. Once I got out of that environment and got to actually pursue helping other young students find their passion for dance it made so much sense as to why I loved it so much.
I always wanted to get my degree and after hearing a few times in my career “Well you don’t have your bachelor’s” I decided it was finally time to pursue it. I am so glad after all these years I went back to finish something I had started so many years ago. I did it now in a way that encompasses so much more of the experience and knowledge I have gained up to this point. I wanted to really show my own daughters that you can do anything at any age and always have goals. They might not happen the exact way you planned them but they are always reachable if you want them bad enough.
