We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Angelala a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Angelala, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What was it like going from idea to execution? Can you share some of the backstory and some of the major steps or milestones?
I’ve always loved Techno and House Music so to actually be a creator in this community has been a dream come true. I started my music career in a female pop duo. After a couple of years I knew that wasn’t what I wanted to pursue. That was when I started making writing and singing to House and Techno. I sent vocals to some producers and the collaborations turned out amazing. That was in 2018 and so far all of my songs have been released on labels and I’ve had the honor to work with many legendary producers.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’ve always loved singing and music. I took many classes in high school and college. I also started writing poetry in high school. As stated I started making music in a female pop duo. I wrote the lyrics for both of us and loved it. After leaving that project I started my solo career in music. Since I’d always been a fan of Techno and House, that was the kind of music I chose to pursue.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Some very well respected producers and DJs not only believed in me, they collaborated with me as well.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I used to be a part of a female pop duo where I was not only a singer, I was the songwriter for both of us. We were immediately signed to a label. The dynamic between the label owner, myself and the other artist in the group was extremely toxic. We most definitely had different creative goals. The other artist and I found a loophole in our contract and left the label. Although we were happy to leave, we too still had different opinions of artistry. We parted ways and it was the best thing I could have done as an artist. Going solo and signing my songs to different labels instead of myself is so much better for me.
