We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Angela Wolf Quaintance a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Angela, appreciate you joining us today. What do you think Corporate America gets wrong in your industry?
My business creates branded video content for small to midsize businesses. With the rise of AI generated content, corporations are trying to remove the human element from the creative process. I see it in little ways, such as AI written scripts, and in big ways, such as fully AI created videos. While I think AI can be a very useful tool, it is not a creator. If you want consumers to invest in your products or services, then you need to invest in your marketing. Audiences can tell an inauthentic message when they see one. People want to buy from brands that they feel connected to. Creating authentic content is a way to connect. This is one place that I think small businesses can actually have an advantage over large corporations.Videos featuring the business owner on screen is a great way for consumers to feel like they know the brand. They aren’t buying from a faceless corporation – they are buying from someone they like.

Angela, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Angela, and I’m the owner of Angela Wolf Video. We create brand videos for small to midsize businesses. Based in Philadelphia, we work with clients along the East Coast. In February 2024, we opened our very first studio space in South Philadelphia. I had always loved videos and storytelling. My mother likes to tell the story of a time when I was four years old. She walked into my bedroom to find me sitting on the floor, in the dark, with all of my stuffed animals lined up in a row. She asked me what was I doing? I explained, “I’m telling them a movie!” It was hardly a surprise that I went to film school, graduating from Temple University with a degree in Film and Media Arts. My first few jobs out of college were working as an internal videographer and video editor for several different companies. However, I kept running into the same problem: women were not taken seriously. Whether it was being paid less, given less work, or not being listened to, myself and the other women around me continually ran into road blocks. Even when I decided to branch off as a freelancer, I had male videographers tell me – a woman – that they would “love” to hire women, but there just aren’t any in the industry. I knew I could do better. In 2016 I started Angela Wolf Video. We are a certified woman-owned small business with the mission to hire and train women in the video industry.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
Corporate America would like you to believe that big businesses have it all figured out. They are a well-oiled machine, built purely on their innovation and brilliance in the field. There’s just no way for us small businesses to compete. Well, I’m here to say that is not true. While my primary clients are small to midsize businesses, I have worked with a few large companies throughout the years. There has been plenty of times where I went into the project nervous – could my small business really provide the creativity and the expertise they are looking for? Then once the project is complete, I look back and think to myself, “wow, I was more prepared than they were!” Just because a company is bigger, doesn’t automatically mean it’s better. Small businesses can bring something unique and personal to their clients – whether it’s a consumer or national brand.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
My favorite thing to do is to make my clients cry. That sounds a little counterintuitive, right? Hear me out. My company creates videos, but at the end of the day we tell stories. When I create a brand video that showcases the Mom and Pop who started the company, I’m helping their legacy live on. When I create an about video for a nonprofit, I tell the stories of how people’s lives were changed. When I create a brand video for a small business, I’m capturing the hard work and dedication someone has poured into their passion. I get to combine my creativity with my love of business. Seeing the client’s reaction as they watch their video for the first time is my favorite part of the job.
