Angela, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. It’s easy to look at a business or industry as an outsider and assume it’s super profitable – but we’ve seen over and over again in our conversation with folks that most industries have factors that make profitability a challenge. What’s biggest challenge to profitability in your industry?
I think the biggest challenge in the industry where I work is competition. My job is 100% competition. I strongly believe that New York, the city where I live, generally leads people to be competitive but because this is the reality New York is a competitive city. Each goal is competition. New York has been called the most competitive city in the world and has the ability to attract the world’s top talent and I believe the city’s economy is driven by a number of factors, from media, art and fashion to technology and fashion finance.The United States is a land of enormous opportunities and New York concentrates them all. If you want to invest, surely New York is the right city.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Angela Valentino and I am a make-up artist, I was born in Milan in Italy and now I have been living in New York for seven and a half years.I have a degree in scenography and costume design for the show in one of the most famous academies in the world, Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera and graduated from the most famous school in Italy in makeup. I love my job and my work is passion, but behind so much passion there are many sarifici.I have been working in the entertainment world for 19 years and in Italy I have worked with many stylists such as: Versace, Fendi, Moncler, Roccobarocco, Dolce & Gabbana I have also worked in prestigious theaters such as the Teatro la Scala. When I was still in university I took a trip to the United States, I started with 80 set designers to discover the three most famous cities in the world of entertainment: New York, Los Angeles and Las Vegas.This completely changed my life because I decided to leaving for America and initially studying English but then everything changed and for a year that I had to stay I stayed seven and a half years and I currently live in New York and work for American television, fashion, etc. I won an award as best make-up artist in Los Angeles fashion week in 2018, in 2019 as best make-up artist in new York fashion week and this year 2022 I received an award as a recognized artist in the United States.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Yes, there is a mission for every single day of my life. Living in New York, a very beautiful city, full of energy and crazy at the same time, I learned to defend myself from everything and everyone, this city is a jungle and if you don’t have a goal you will never make it. I’ve been in New York for seven and a half years and have never lost sight of my goal. In order not to lose your goal you need to be fully focused every day and even when something goes wrong you must always be ready for a plan b. Only in this way can you reach your goal.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
From my previous stories, or rather adventures I like to call them, it is that in life I have learned to trust only myself. New York is a big city that every single day gives you the opportunity to meet different people from different cultures and I think this is a great thing, as I said before New York is a city full of energy it is an overwhelming city, I met beautiful people but also many people who managed to mask their personality, people who for me were not only a bad experience but also made me grow a lot because I believe that from every bad experience you can also learn a lot.
