We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful ANGELA THOMPSON. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with ANGELA below.
ANGELA, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
One of the biggest risks I’ve ever taken was quitting my full-time medical social work job to accept a temporary travel assignment across the country. In 2015, I was exhausted—overworked, underpaid, and craving something more. I started searching for new opportunities and stumbled upon the idea of travel social work. It immediately sparked something in me. I had always wanted to see the world, but I never imagined my career in social work could make that possible.
I reached out to a recruiter who explained that I needed at least a year of medical social work experience before I could qualify for travel assignments. So, I made a plan, gained the experience, and in 2016, I was finally ready. My recruiter submitted me for a position in California—my first interview didn’t work out, but the second one did. Within two weeks, I was packing up my life in Alabama and preparing to start my first 13-week assignment in San Francisco.
Everyone around me was shocked that I would leave a stable job for something temporary, but I trusted my faith and intuition. I’ll never forget my late grandmother praying over me before I left—that blessing gave me peace. That leap of faith completely changed my life and career. It opened doors I never knew existed and eventually inspired me to write my book, So You Want to Be a Travel Social Worker? Say Less!

ANGELA, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Angela Thompson, and I’m a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker dedicated to helping people heal, grow, and thrive. My path into social work began with a deep desire to serve others and make a meaningful impact in people’s lives. Over the years, I’ve worked across hospital systems, community programs, and now telehealth—each experience shaping the compassionate, solution-focused approach I use today.
Through telehealth platforms like Teladoc and SpringHealth, I provide therapy that integrates mindfulness, strength-based techniques, and practical coping strategies to support clients navigating anxiety, depression, stress, and major life transitions. My goal is to meet people where they are and help them build confidence, clarity, and peace within their everyday lives.
In addition to my clinical work, I’m also a Travel Medical Social Worker and the author of So You Want to Be a Travel Social Worker? Say Less!—a resource created to educate and empower other social workers to explore the freedom and flexibility of travel assignments. That book grew into AST Coaching, my coaching and mentorship platform where I help aspiring travel social workers nationwide create careers that align with their values and lifestyle goals.
What sets my work apart is the balance between clinical care, coaching, and creative expression. I’m proud to have built a career that blends service, purpose, and entrepreneurship—all while staying rooted in authenticity and compassion. I believe that healing isn’t just about managing symptoms; it’s about helping people rediscover their own power and design a life that feels meaningful and aligned.
What I most want readers to know is that my journey has been built on faith, courage, and consistency. Every leap of faith—from becoming a travel social worker to launching a coaching brand—has taught me that growth happens outside of comfort zones. My mission now is to pour that same encouragement into others—to remind them that they are capable, equipped, and worthy of building the life they dream of.

Do you think you’d choose a different profession or specialty if you were starting now?
Absolutely. I truly believe social work has been a part of me since childhood. I was always the one volunteering, listening, and offering support to others—it came naturally. When I took my first Intro to Social Work class in college, something just clicked. I knew without a doubt that this was the path I was meant to walk.
Becoming a Licensed Clinical Social Worker has been one of the most rewarding decisions of my life. It’s allowed me to connect with people from all walks of life, help them navigate challenges, and witness incredible growth and resilience. I’ve experienced so many meaningful moments through this work, and even with its challenges, I wouldn’t change a thing. Social work has not only shaped my career but also deepened my sense of purpose—and for that, I’m truly grateful.

Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
Flexibility—without a doubt. Social work requires both heart and adaptability. Every client, setting, and situation is different, and being too rigid can quickly lead to burnout. The ability to adjust, meet people where they are, and extend yourself grace along the way is essential.
Equally important is practicing self-care. You can’t pour from an empty cup, and this profession can be emotionally demanding. Taking time to rest, recharge, and maintain balance in your personal life allows you to show up fully for the people you serve. Flexibility and self-care aren’t luxuries in this field—they’re lifelines.
