We recently connected with Angela Thomas and have shared our conversation below.

Angela , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Alright, so you had your idea and then what happened? Can you walk us through the story of how you went from just an idea to executing on the idea

Do your remember making bubble maps in English class? Well it’s basically a map full of bubbles, you write your main idea into a bubble, and you continually make more bubbles with relatable ideas. For me, this is how I was able to come up with name for my business. I wrote the word “Birthday” in my main bubble, and keep writing until a relatable word came out of it… and eventually I came up with “Sugar” . At the time we used to offer candy catering as well as party decor services, so Birthday Sugar was a perfect name.. 10 years later and we are Birthday Sugar LLC.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?

My name is Angela Thomas, I am a luxury event designer. My company, Birthday Sugar LLC, is a upscale event design company. We specialize in luxury event services.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?

Whew! Ok, here we go… July 31, 2021. I was diagnosed with Covid-19. I learned the news as I waited to go into surgery to give birth to my daughter. Fast forward to four days later I was rushed back to the hospital due to complications from surgery. For the next 60 days I was on a ECMO (life support) machine due to covid shutting down all of my organs simultaneously. I was in a medical induced coma for 30 days. Afterwards, I had to learn how to use my fine motor skills, talk, and walk again. Throughout my hospitalization, I was still managing the day to day operations of my company. Although my clients was more than understanding of my circumstances, my team and I managed to fulfill every event on our books!

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?

“With new levels, comes new devils” this figure of speech makes the optimism in me cringe. I believe you should speak things into existence, and if you tell yourself that the higher you get, the harder it will get… then you will believe this to be true. However, if you tell yourself things like; I can do this with no setbacks, I’m unstoppable, I deserve success with no strings attached etc…”, you will start to believe these things too!
