We recently connected with Angela Quach and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Angela, thanks for joining us today. Risking taking is a huge part of most people’s story but too often society overlooks those risks and only focuses on where you are today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – it could be a big risk or a small one – but walk us through the backstory.
There is no great reward without great risk. I learned to never settle for less. Every path taken will always have challenges; that’s life! I’ve learned that if I’m going to endure challenges, the reward should be worthy of my dreams. I had to let go of my fear of not succeeding in order to make room for greatness. I had to fill that space within me with hope, faith, and conviction.
When I first started my own business, I can’t even begin to explain how scared I was! All my fears and doubts came crashing in on me, “Would I be successful?” “How will I make money?” “Where do I even start?”. Slowly and surely, I started toward my dreams. I signed up for a local entrepreneurship course and was surrounded by other like-minded entrepreneurs, which felt very empowering. I learned that sometimes you have to do it scared, that your best self is waiting for you on the other side of that fear. And when my company made its first million, I understood why I had to take those risks. Those risks showed me unknowns that needed to be solved, so I could achieve something so greatly unknown from the life I knew.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Angela Quach, CEO and Founder of The Destiny Lab. The Destiny Lab is a business solutions company, specializing in transformation, innovation and leadership. I am also a life coach and motivational speaker. I believe that everyone has a right to achieve the vision for their life.
Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
Delegate and demand excellence. I am a recovering people-pleaser and I was used to being the jack-of-all-trades. I would put everything on my plate and expect very little from my team. I would assign one task, I’d get it back with mistakes. I would roll my eyes and make all the edits myself because I thought, “I can do it better and faster”. Please take it from me, it’s okay to delegate and demand excellence. I had to learn to trust my team with an assignment, give them feedback, and hold them accountable for delivering up to my standards. I went from being Miss-Do-It-All to Miss-Trust-My-Team. In line with my first point, when you hire the right people, they want to do well, they have an internal drive to deliver excellence as well. And your job as the business owner is to create opportunities for your team to rise to the occasion.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to give myself permission to dream big. I was hindering my own vision because I was scared to own a big, beautiful vision for my company. When you give yourself permission to dream big, you give the Universe permission to create space for it. You must plant your own seeds for greatness to grow.
My goal is for The Destiny Lab to be a $50M company. Currently, The Destiny Lab has been evaluated as a $1.3M company. We did that in less than two years! I believe that could have only happened because I prepared for this to happen. Now, what if I didn’t dream big? What if I planned for a $5K company? You will only go as far as your capacity, that’s why I KNOW it starts with your mindset. Your company is a reflection of your vision.
