Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Angela Perez. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Angela, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
Most meaningful project was for Sony Alpha Female+ and it was showcasing the beauty, strength, resilience and impact that our elders have in our community. This project focused on telling the stories of people embracing their age and how their wisdom helps the younger generation. It was a story to highlight a demographic that is often under represented and forgotten about in the media. Beauty standards in our media is constantly selling us on anti aging products and I wanted to showcase that aging should not be looked at negatively but positively we get to celebrate another year of life every time we age. I did a portrait series and told a backstory about each subject.
Angela, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I began by picking up my first professional camera in 2006 and have been non stop practicing this craft since then. Before I started my business and charging I knew I wanted the most practical experience and knowledge possible to be able to offer my clients an impeccable and valuable product . I made the switch to professional and full time career doing photography in 2012 after 6 years of jam packing knowledge and reading all the fundamentals of photography and practicing constantly. My work is fine art portrait and editorial photography. What sets me apart is my ingenuity of creating a specific mood within my photos that when you scroll it creates a disruption by standing out from the rest wether that is with the use of color, composition or theme. I enjoy creating photos that will disrupt the monotony most of us encounter while scrolling through social media. I don’t want to create what everyone else is creating instead I want to gear my art towards the opposite of what everyone else is doing. I don’t want to follow trends I want to create them and I think that comes across when people view my work.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
Do not invest in what is popular just because is popular. You cannot express and communicate your true self identity if you continue to follow what everyone else is buying and consuming. We are all just becoming clones of each other. Are you buying that product because you truly like it or simply because the masses told you that is what you should like. Be authentic and if you like something even if is not popular or the norm invest in that. We need more people to be individuals. This way we support more local artists or unknown artist and we stay true to ourselves in the long run.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect is simply art giving me a platform to express my voice in all topics that are important to me. Without art my voice wouldn’t be as amplified as it is through art. I find people value what I have to say more when that topic is expressed through art itself.
