Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Angela Mongrain-Boell. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Angela , appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear the story of how you went from this being just an idea to making it into something real.
I didn’t necessarily learn social media the way a lot of people do. I was both drawn to it and thrown right in. So in most ways, I’m self taught. A lot, and I mean A LOT, of trial and error occured. It’s all about learning from those mistakes and growing from them.
I like a lot of people doing content creation, do the research by watching everything they can on social media platforms. Looking for what is trending and getting on it before it’s over. Though it’s a lot of finding out what is trending, it’s also a lot of being creative and coming up with ideas you love and think others will too.
Not everything should be about views and likes. Make the content you love and everything else will follow! I think the hardest part while learning and growing in this area is having a great team around you that is supportive. That isn’t always going to be the case, and that can often be discouraging, but push through! Stand behind what you’re making and putting out!
Since I am in a category where a lot of others in my area aren’t – which is creating content for someone(s) else- it can force you to step out of your comfort zone. Embrace it!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My start in the beauty industry came very early on! I got my cosmetology license at 17 while still attending high school. After that I have always been somehow involved in the trade. Finding my passion, not being behind the chair, required me to take a step back into other industries. After several years away, I found myself missing it. So I went back into the salon environment and quickly found myself gravitating to social media and content creation. I was always a blogger girl growing up so I found that I loved not only building sites and writing, but also creating content for myself and others.
I work at the amazing Moxie Park Salon. I make videos, reels, Tiktoks, along with creating posts on their social media. I also coordinate their brand deals, branding shoots, and work with setting up cross promotions! I’m very savvy when it comes to predicting trends. I think this sets me apart from others who are in the same boat as I, and that makes me a rare one. Most salon accounts are run by stylists or owners… I’m not either. That gives me a lot more time to plan, research, and produce. I’m also very fortunate to have two bosses that are appreciative of someone taking the lead and trusting me to do it! This gives me a lot of creative freedom, which I love! Not only do they allow me to do that, they also allow me to work with others. Others in the industry might see this as competition where we see it as community. I’ve been able to work with other stylists, salons, and even people in other fields to coach them on what their social presence is missing. Helping others behind the scenes is what I love the most!
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect for me would be helping and highlighting the achievements of those around me. I’ve never found myself wanting to be the face of a brand or in front of the camera. I have always found my happiness and comfort being behind the scenes. I’m the biggest hype woman out there! I love showing off the people around me and making sure they know their talent is so appreciated. I also love making content and then watching its growth!
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I work in an industry that can often be competitive. It’s often about who can get to the top first. Who can be “the best”. I personally hate this! There’s enough success to go around and we want to share that with everyone around us, especially in our field. I want more community and less competition. The beauty industry is so female driven, that myself and the people around me want to make sure we’re empowering the women around us. That’s what drives my creative journey.
