We were lucky to catch up with Angela Mathews recently and have shared our conversation below.
Angela, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s jump right into how you came up with the idea?
My boyfriend and I are both photographers with different strengths. Having made magazines / zines and being avid collectors, we knew the creative power of printing and showing your work. As I have been building the photo community in Austin, TX through Photo Club at Soho House – I saw a real gap serving creative-minded homies with inspiring content while nurturing real communities. We came up with the idea to start “Austin’s first newsstand” where we could continue to shoot and print our own work and bring some of our favorite magazines and zines from around the world to inspire a new community here in Austin. Our biggest hurdle has been learning how to blend our working styles because we know that once we open our doors, we won’t miss.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Howdy, I’m Angela Mathews and I’ve been calling Austin, TX home for the past 14 years. I studied documentary film in college and worked as a commercial editor in Chicago. I had a dream of opening my own business for most of my adult life- as did my boyfriend.
Our brand, Keep Looking, will be the “first newsstand in Austin” – reimagined. We sell magazines, zines, branded merch – and carry a highly curated assortment of vintage and emerging clothing brands. Keep Looking is a meeting place to discover new perspectives that shape and inform how people can and do live their day-to-day. We also are continuing to do what we do best- shoot and design our own lifestyle magazine under the same brand name “Keep Looking.”
I’m proud of the community we are building and the deep connections we’ve made around the world – from other brands, photographers, publishers and just good humans. I will always be most proud of how people feel in our presence and feeling included in what we are building.

Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I continue to learn about new resources for small business owners and creatives every day! Part of the process – for better or for worse- is learning as your journey unfolds. I will say that the best resources are other creatives and business owners. I also loved Courier Media for featuring real, tactical stories of building businesses from creative entrepreneurs.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Working with other people and sharing ideas / gaining new perspectives.
