We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Angela Masters. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Angela below.
Hi Angela, thanks for joining us today. Let’s kick things off with talking about how you serve the underserved, because in our view this is one of the most important things the small business community does for society – by serving those who the giant corporations ignore, small business helps create a more inclusive and just world for all of us.
Originally, I started my business in the wedding industry as a traveling Fine Art Wedding & Portrait Photographer based out of Kansas City. I love capturing beautiful moments and creating timeless memories for couples and families. However, the pandemic wrecked havoc in our local market but it did teach me a valuable lesson: never put all of your eggs in one basket. As a business owner, I need to ensure that my business has more than one revenue stream and multiple ways to generate leads. That’s how I stumbled into the local music scene here in Kansas City and found a whole world of new opportunities. Kansas City is home to a plethora of talented musicians who have embraced me as one of their own. Being gig workers, like myself, they suffered financial hardship due to the shutdowns and cancellations during the pandemic. A story I am all too familiar with. I am happy to step in and offer my professional expertise and help these talented artists elevate their online presence through brand awareness, professional imagery and social media management, etc. At the end of the day, what drives me is my passion for creativity and community. I love being able to capture beautiful moments through my photography work, and I’m grateful to be a part of the thriving local music scene here in Kansas City.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am Co-Owner and Co-Founder of Black Moon Media, LLC, a full service media production company based out of Kansas City. We specialize in weddings, portraits and branding. What sets apart from other photographers is the way we approach our craft. Whether we’re shooting a wedding or a branding session, we take pride in providing our clients with a stress-free experience. We believe the key to creating beautiful artwork lies in keeping clients focused on the connections they’re experiencing in any given moment. Whether it’s a couple’s love for each other, a parent’s bond with their child, or the way a musician connects to their audience, we strive to capture those special connections in every shot. Technical expertise aside, connection is truly the key to ensuring those captured moments translate beautifully in the final product.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Photographing these artists and the iconic venues they perform in, is an entirely different world compared to wedding and portrait photography. It requires a completely different set of skills and techniques to capture all the raw energy and emotions of a live performance while also figuring out how to shoot in unpredictable variable light. It’s been a challenge to master but it’s one that I have thoroughly enjoyed and embraced. I absolutely love generating excitement around these amazing people and making them look like the stars they really are! It never gets old!

How’d you meet your business partner?
Back in 2020, I had the opportunity to document a studio recording for my longtime friend and musician, Fletcher Christian. It was during this recording that I first met Adam Hagerman, who was the drummer recording the studio album. Little did I know at the time that Adam was not just a talented drummer but also a successful photographer. Adam and I hit it off right away and we followed each other on social media after that first connection. However, like most people, life got in the way and we lost touch for a while. Fast forward to 2022, Adam and I reconnected after some pretty drastic changes in our personal lives. It was during this reconnection that we both realized that we were meant to be together, not just professionally but personally as well. With our shared passion for photography and videography, we decided to create Black Moon Media, LLC. This was a new venture for both of us, but one we were excited to explore. Adam had previously owned a photo studio in Baxter, KS and I traveled North America as a fine art wedding and portrait photographer for over a decade. Together, we bring the best of both of these world and create a really unique experience for our clients. It’s funny how life works out sometimes. If it wasn’t for that chance meeting back in 2020, Adam and I may have never crossed paths again. Luckily, fate had other plans, and I couldn’t be happier to have him as both a business partner and a life partner.
