We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Angela Laviena a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Angela, thanks for joining us today. So, let’s imagine that you were advising someone who wanted to start something similar to you and they asked you what you would do differently in the startup-process knowing what you know now. How would you respond?
If I was starting over I would have not doubted myself. In my industry we tend to underestimate ourselves and let people put a price on our work. I also would have let myself be mentored and not let my pride take away learning opportunities. There is always something new to learn and it doesn’t matter the years of experience you have you need to be humble and accept that you do not know everything.

Through Chef Angela Laviena, All Modern Cuisine offers Catering Services, Culinary Industry Consulting, and Gastronomy Workshops. Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Our journey has not been a smooth road. Our 1st catering business in Puerto Rico suffered thru the passing of Hurricane Maria. My husband and I decided that we should bring our business to the United States and give ourselves the opportunity to start over. After 3 months of arriving in Florida, my husband suddenly passed away. I was left with the challenge of starting our business while adjusting to a new life in a new place and raising our daughters alone.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I believe our attention to detail has helped build our reputation. We take pride in preparing carefully curated menus that are customized on individual needs and styles. The events are a reflection of our work and our food presentation and settings are a direct representation of our high standards.
