We recently connected with Angela Kim and have shared our conversation below.
Angela, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
When I was in highschool, I didn’t really have plans to go to college/university like most of my classmates. At the time I loved music, fashion, and all things beauty related. I didn’t know yet that it would be a possible career option. But I was really into doing makeup and hair for fun.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Angela Kim and I’m from Los Angeles. I am a haircut specialist and I run my hair studio called Ritual Space located in Hollywood. I opened my space during the pandemic in June of 2020. The year prior to that, I started dreaming about creating my own work space. I became more conscious of the products I was purchasing/using everything from beauty products to household product’s. Learning about these harmful chemicals in products was something I couldn’t ignore. I am very happy and proud to share that I’ve been offering services using clean/toxin free haircare for the past 3.5 years. I create haircuts that are effortless and easy to wear/style so my guests can look and feel great always. My thing is, hair doesn’t have to be this hard thing to take care of. I teach my guests how to style their hair through simple approach. And if each guest left my studio feeling both relaxed and/or energized, that would be the cherry on top.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a hairdresser is that I get to meet some amazing people and get to help them express themselves through hair. Personally, I’ve always loved getting my haircut because it feels so therapeutic. And for many of my guests, getting a haircut is part of their self care ritual. So being a part of that is most gratifying for me. Giving my guest a haircut is more than just that. Most of clients I’ve been cutting for many years. Some have been with me since the beginning. Which means I’ve been doing their hair for 14 years. It’s pretty special.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
For a really long time, I had always tried to figure everything out on my own. I was raised to be independent and I’m thankful for all of the lessons that taught me. It has shaped me into who I am today and helped me to forge my path in life and career. But when I started my own business, I realized that some things I couldn’t do on my own. It was really difficult in the beginning and there were moments of regret. Asking others for help and accepting help has been a huge learning curve for me. It’s something I work on constantly. But now I know it’s nothing to be ashamed about. We can all learn from eachother and grow together.
