We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Angela Kelly a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Angela, thanks for joining us today. Risking taking is a huge part of most people’s story but too often society overlooks those risks and only focuses on where you are today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – it could be a big risk or a small one – but walk us through the backstory.
Inked Pixels is a faith based business. Back in 2021, I felt the leading of the Lord to allow our clients to name the price that they would pay for their project. At first, I was concerned because it is possible that not everyone would want to be fair when deciding on a price; however, I felt the Lord ask me did I trust Him to make up the difference. That settled it for me, and from that day on Inked Pixels became a pay your way business. In the first year my revenue more than doubled, and since I have had steady clientele even without advertising. It was a risk well worth taking.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I classify myself as a visual communicator because it is my goal to communicate each of my client’s visions through graphic design. I have been designing for almost 20 years. I have a Bachelor of Science in Public Relations, and when I started working I got a position in a marketing department. The problem was that it was only me in the department. There was a small budget for graphic design; so a few projects were outsourced to another company, but the majority of advertisements needed to be designed. I had a work buddy who showed me a couple of things in Photoshop, but after that I had to learn on my own and quickly. I fell in love. It became clear to me over the years that I did not want to do marketing and PR anymore. I just wanted to design. I got my first client when I saw a brochure she made for herself, and I asked her could I help her make it better. From that point on I started growing both my skills and my business. When I was laid off from the non-profit I was working for, I decided that this would be a great time to strike out of my own fully. There have been some tuff growing years, but I would not change it.
I am proud to help clients bring their visions to life and sometimes create a vision for my clients, and I am proud to offer this service in a way that’s affordable to anyone. Most people have a dream, but a lot of us think we cannot afford it. With the pay your way service that Inked Pixels offers, everyone is able to afford the design work that they desire or that will help them build their organization.
Inked Pixels also spends time giving back. Every year I pick projects that I would like to do pro bono. I will see a design or event on social media, and when it touches me, I will reach out to ask if that person or organization would like me to design for their event, business, and so on for free. I also partner with community agencies allowing them to pay a reduced retainer rate of their choosing. This allows them to put more money into serving the community.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Most of my clients come to me through word of mouth. I truly care about each project and each person. Whether the project pays $5 or $5,000, I treat everyone the same and put my heart into what I am doing. My clients feel this and see this. I often go above and beyond what I have offered in their contract, and some clients receive surprises in addition to what they have paid for. I provide quality work and do not take a long time to get it done. Because of this, my clients share their experiences with others, and I constantly have clients seeking me out.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
I have been most effective by caring and being genuine. Clients love working with me; so they come back again and again, and they bring others with them. Clients are also attracted to our policy of naming their own price. When people hear this they often want to work with Inked Pixels.
