Alright, Angela thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. So, one thing many business owners consider is donating a percentage of sales or profits to an organization or cause. We’d love to hear your thoughts and the story behind how and why you chose the cause or organization you donate to.

Thank you for having me! Yes, when it comes to philanthropic duties, I simply want to assist in any way I can in giving a voice to the voiceless. There are two organizations that speak to me, and they are in the trenches everyday doing just that: the ASPCA and ACLU. I’m quite proud that as a small business, familiar…yet different can participate via micro-donations. What may be considered a nominal contribution, in the long run, this form of gifting can be a consistent support of their work.

I’d be happy to. Hello. My name is Angela Jones, and I am the Founder of familiar…yet different.

FYD is a Black Woman owned & operated e-commerce brand offering affordable athleisure apparel and sneakers to women petite to plus size. Most garments are produced in the USA, with worldwide shipping available.

familiar…yet different was initially established in 2017 due to my frustration with the leggings market. I went shopping for Yoga Pants and was unable to find a pair that was well-made, aesthetically pleasing and less than $100! I thought that was absurd, so I made my own. After receiving countless compliments and “where did you get those?” inquiries. I soft launched a capsule collection and now work to share them with my fellow athleisurewear enthusiasts no matter the size of their waistline or their wallet.

Since those early launch days, FYD has grown from being “just a leggings brand” to now offering Sports Bras, size inclusive Compression Tights and Yoga Pants (up to 6XL!) and we are now producing full-scale Athleisure collections twice a year that include Unisex Sneakers, Tees & Hoodies!

Do you sell on your site, or do you use a platform like Amazon, Etsy, Cratejoy, etc?

I discovered rather early on several disadvantages of selling with some of these platforms:

High competition.
High selling fees.
Complex order management.
Lack of control and ownership.
No insight into customer data.
Risk of scams.
Limited control over customer experience.
Possibility of counterfeit products.
Heavy dependence on the selling platforms policies and algorithms.

The list goes on and on. In the end, it just wasn’t a good fit for us.

What’s been the best source of new clients for you?

Connecting with customers has been quite the learning experience.

The winning combo thus far has been attracting new clients across several channels:

First, online advertising including running advertisements on targeted websites through Google Ads and YouTube.

Email Marketing via monthly newsletters with campaign & sale announcements sent directly to our ever-growing client base.

Good ole fashioned word-of-mouth.

Last but certainly not least, generating new leads wouldn’t be complete without traditional media coverage. I have been extremely lucky to have familiar…yet different featured in both print & digital magazines and on several local morning news segments!
