Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Angela Jacob. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Angela, appreciate you joining us today. Can you share an important lesson you learned in a prior job that’s helped you in your career afterwards?
My most important lesson I have ever had was actually when I was in my third year of college. I was working at my local community hospital back home when I was transporting patients. I worked as a radiology aide after my college classes. One day I was transporting a very pleasant patient down to CT for a scan. During our walk down to the radiology department, we talked about many things and shared a few laughs. After her scan I walked her back up to her hospital room to await her results. Before I left the patient’s room that night, she asked me what I was going to school for. I shared that I wanted to be a surgeon. I would be graduating the following year. She replied, “That’s amazing. Promise me one thing.” I said, “Sure. What’s that?”, not knowing what I was getting myself into. She answered, “Don’t ever lose your sense of humor. If you keep your personality and sense of humor, you will be an amazing doctor.” I have never forgotten that.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers?
I am a board-certified foot and ankle surgeon, who has trained under both podiatric and orthopedic surgeons. I have completed further training in total ankle replacement, minimally invasive surgery, and advanced ankle arthroscopy procedures. Originally from Wisconsin, I have settled in Michigan and married my wonderful husband, Tom. I have many hobbies: hunting, fishing, camping, art, painting, gardening, archery, and music.
Originally I actually walked out of my college health advisor’s office when he recommended I go into podiatry. My response was “I don’t want to be a foot doctor,” and I walked out of his office. After a few more years of schooling, working in our local hospital, and shadowing a number of different specialties, I met the most humble, down-to-earth physician. He was a podiatrist. After realizing that I could have a career that encompasses so many specialties in one and actually has quite a bit of variety while having a great work-life balance, I was intrigued. The rest is history…
In a way, I think I love podiatry because it is a perfect mix of medicine, science and art. I agree with DaVinci, “The human foot is a masterpiece of engineering and a work of art,” and I have found my passion in that.
Work with patients to compose a treatment plan that works for them. I treat all of my patients like family. I am down-to-earth, have a personality, and hope to continue learning so I can truly give my patients the best care at all times.
After 5 years of practice I have opened my own practice from scratch so that I can give my patients the best care possible. I am making my office unique in the fact that there is on-site x-ray, ultrasound, a specialized pediatrics exam room, procedure room, and medical store. In the next year I hope to offer medical pedicures by a trained pedicurist in a spa-like setting. We also offer state-of-the-art procedures such as fat pad rejuvenation, custom orthotics, minimally invasive surgery, ankle joint replacement, all in a family-friendly environment. We even have a therapy dog in the clinic! My goal is to provide state-of-the-art care in a modern, welcoming environment that is positive and provides numerous services to patients.
If you could go back in time, do you think you would have chosen a different profession or specialty?
If I could go back, I would not change my specialty. Podiatry has changed so much over the last 20 years, even in the last 5 years! I love the variety in our specialty and how you can really change a patient’s quality of life. I wish more people would become educated about the field of podiatric medicine and surgery. There is a lot of misinformation out there about podiatrists, and over time I hope to help change that through education and sharing my excitement for the field.
Let’s move on to buying businesses – can you talk to us about your experience with business acquisitions?
After working under a couple different physicians, not making what I am worth, and failing to negotiate the purchase of an already existing practice, I decided to set out on my own and build my practice from scratch. Even though it may not be easy, I am so happy that I did it. Leaving a toxic work environment to make my own positive practice has been the best thing for not only myself, but my staff and my patients. I truly love going to work everyday now, especially knowing that I can give the best care possible to my patients without being held back.
