We recently connected with Angela Fromme and have shared our conversation below.
Angela, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
It was after I had my 3rd child. I had kind of lost myself in motherhood. I started painting again because it’s something I always naturally came back to. It was kind of without my permission. Organically I was inclined to grab a brush and paint something. People showed interest in my work and I sold a few things. It made me happy and so I knew I wanted to keep going to see what was possible.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
When I was a kid I loved to draw. I think one summer that was pretty much all I did. I got pretty good but it felt hard. I enjoyed the end result though. I ended up hanging with the wrong crowd and as I got older I turned to drugs and alcohol to cope with my overwhelming emotions. I suppressed a LOT of what I was feeling. I didn’t pick up a paintbrush till I was about 18 years old. I had a roommate that had gone to art school. He let me use his supplies and I found my love of abstract painting. I usually wasn’t sober so when I finally got clean back in 08, painting felt like a trigger for me. I felt like I couldn’t create freely unless my mind was altered by a substance. I pressed on and finally felt my way through everything. I met my husband and we had a few kids so life got really hectic. I kind of lost myself and my art once i became a mom, but ive always come back to painting. I’ve learned so much about myself and found my creative voice. That’s what sets me apart. I have my own marks, my own style. People have told me that they can feel the energy in my art. They want a piece of that energy or vibe. I mainly create large abstract works but I’ve done all kinds of things from house portraits to butterflies. The butterflies really became popular and I’ve had so much fun with those. I have a friend who lost her 3 month old baby and I painted her a white butterfly. Ever since then I’ve been painting all different species of them. I think the thing I’m most proud of is my ability to press on. My resilience and being able to courageously follow the inner voice that says I can do this. I can make a career out of this and I deserve that! Anyone can do it if they really want.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I guess the most rewarding aspect of being an artist is the fact that it makes me happy. We are all out here looking for things that we think will make us happier, and I don’t necessarily feel like I rely on creating in order to be happy, but I allow the happiness to emanate as I’m creating and that is the reward. The fact that I get to put art out into the world that came from this place of true happiness. Its literally a part of my wellbeing. I have to paint or be creative in some way or else my health suffers. I have learned this about myself. I used to think painting was a luxury but now i know that its part of my self care. Its not selfish its life giving.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I tend to get a lot of engagement on facebook, and the reason I think that is, is because I have been sort of an open book with my life. I’ve shared many vulnerable things and talked about how I’ve moved through those things, I post insightful thoughts yet raw and relatable content that many people can relate to but maybe have a hard time sharing on their personal page. I’ve just never really let fear stop me from posting about very real things that I’ve gone through and how I’ve navigated my way through. I very much look forward to reading content from others in this way so I want to use my experience to be truly helpful. Life is super painful at times and we are all going through something. Social media is a tool that i use to talk about being a human and relate to other humans. So being real is really important to me. For the most part, people know when you are being authentic.
