We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Angela Fabbri. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Angela below.
Hi Angela, thanks for joining us today. It’s easy to look at a business or industry as an outsider and assume it’s super profitable – but we’ve seen over and over again in our conversation with folks that most industries have factors that make profitability a challenge. What’s biggest challenge to profitability in your industry?
One of the biggest challenges artists face is selling their work. So many creatives are masters at creating and don’t really struggle with inspiration, but when it comes to marketing and selling their work, they hit a road block. This will directly effect profitability…obviously. The most talented artist could be cranking out the most incredible work, but if no one knows they exist they won’t sell a thing. The best thing you can do with any weakness is first, recognize it and then, find someone to help with exactly that piece.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
California born, Mississippi raised, Texas based. I’ve known since I was little that I had a passion to create. I discovered painting around age 15 and knew thats what I was meant to do. Once I realized my passion was a talent, I was so inspired to see what was next. I sold my first painting at 16 when my boss, at the deli I worked at, overheard me talking about my hobby, and he asked if I could paint a portrait of his son. He offered to pay $300 which was more than my two week paycheck working at the deli. I never forgot what it felt like to have someone pay me to do what I loved. These combined experiences lead me to where I am today. I just hit my 6 year anniversary of being a full time artist, I’ve had the opportunity to show my work at the Florence Biennale in Florence, Italy, exhibited during Art Basel Miami in 2019, 2021 ,and 2022, exhibited in Marfa TX. and have collectors across the globe. I paint contemporary style acrylic paintings. My signature is backwards text and bold color combinations which makes my art a unique collectable. Along with fine art, I use images of my work and make home decor items like acrylic trays, coasters, and prints. One of my favorite things about what I do is the relationships I’m able to build with my clients. Having the opportunity to create something that impacts someone so much that they want to hang it in their space to enjoy it every day is the ultimate reward.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
With any business, but new businesses especially, there is a challenge with not having a steady stream of revenue. In the art world it’s especially unpredictable. You could have epic sales one month and then not sell anything for weeks. This can allow for doubt and imposters syndrome to creep in. Its these times especially that it helps to have supportive family and friends to remind you of who you are and the talent you have. Fighting through these times of self doubt are one of the biggest battles one can have. I made the decision when I started this journey that failure was never an option for me. So even on my toughest days, I took one step forward if thats all I could take. Never giving up is the difference between success and failure.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
Covid was one of the biggest curve balls that no business saw coming. For the first time in my career, I had every project in my pipeline come to a halt with no clear sight of when it would come back. One of my biggest lead generators is having events and networking with my collectors in person. This was also deleted from possibilities. I had to quickly reinvent my business model. Thankfully, I already had an ecommerce store, but I had not been maximizing that platform. I dove in to learning how to market my business 100% from a digital platform and began utilizing my email marketing, social media, and ecommerce website to adapt to the new covid times. Now that we’re back to socializing as normal, I am still utilizing my digital marketing platforms and my business is even better from it.
