We were lucky to catch up with Angela Enwezor recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Angela , thanks for joining us today. What do you think it takes to be successful?
Being successful can mean different things to different people, but there are some common factors that contribute to success. Clear goals:
Hard work and dedication
Continuous learning
Resilience and perseverance
Networking and building relationships
Taking risks and stepping out of your comfort zone
Positive mindset and self-belief
Remember, success is subjective, and everyone’s journey is unique. Define what success means to you and work towards it in a way that aligns with your values and aspirations. As a successful self-taught fashion designer, it’s been a combination of passion, creativity, determination, and a strong work ethic. I’ve developed my skillset by learning the basics of fashion designing, understanding the different types of fabrics and textiles, and making out time to study fashion history. I’ve also built a portfolio through my social media and website. I’ve gone further to acquire practical experiences that relate to my fashion business module. It is very important to stay updated with industry trends, I for one love to break rules and take risks in designing. I’ve been Featured in publications and fashion shows.
To be successful you have to be open to learning from everything and everyone that aligns with your brand. Networking and collaboration create a great path to a successful business if well thought out. Be open to feedback and constructive criticism. Attend workshops, take online courses, or seek mentorship from experienced designers. Learning from others and continuously improving your skills will help you refine your craft and stay competitive. Building a successful career as a self-taught fashion designer can be challenging, so it’s important to stay motivated and persistent. Be prepared for setbacks and rejection, but use them as opportunities to learn and grow. Stay focused on your goals and keep pushing forward.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Angela Prisca Enwezor is the brains behind Prisca’S Art. A self-taught, proven, and established seamstress and Stylist with a bespoke fashion brand, Prisca’S Art got its commercial footing in 2018. Born Nigerian with a humble catholic background Angela graduated with a BA in International Relations & History. Angela has since made her home with her family in the District of Columbia. Angela’s love for making clothing goes as far back as her teens as an apprentice in her mom’s hair and fashion boutique in Nigeria. Her passion for mixing art, sourcing genuine fabrics, and creating pieces to fit any woman’s ‘Personality and Lifestyle’ is her footprint. Her slogan is “Creativity is a never-ending dialogue” which resonates with her design passion. An all-inclusive brand that also caters to the plus-size/Curvy women in the market that tries to ignore them. Prisca’S Art aims to inspire women to elevate their wardrobes by embracing all aspects of themselves, including their flaws, and to encourage a Style journey that celebrates authenticity and individuality. The first step towards elevating a woman’s closet is to shift the focus from hiding flaws to embracing them. Imperfections are what make us human, and they should be celebrated rather than concealed. By accepting and loving every aspect of ourselves, we can curate a wardrobe that reflects our unique personality and style. And this is what sets Prisca’S Art apart. Elevating a woman’s closet goes beyond the physical aspect; it is also about nurturing her emotional well-being. Self-care plays a crucial role in this process, as it allows a woman to prioritize her mental and emotional health. Taking time for self-reflection, practicing mindfulness, and engaging in activities that bring joy and fulfillment can positively impact her fashion choices and overall sense of self.
Angela’s favorite fabrics include Adire, Kente, Batik, Kitenge, MudCloth, and Ankara. There is a story to tell about African fabrics and beautiful clothing!!! Prisca’S Art pieces are unique and different.
