We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Angela Das a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Angela, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What’s the best advice you ever gave to a client? How did they benefit / what was the result? (Please note this response is for education/entertainment purposes only and shouldn’t be construed as advice for the reader)
There’s no one-size-fits-all advice….but I find that the “best” advice that I can give someone in the new parent space is to not give up on a hard day. Because *ooof* there are hard days. Remembering to breathe when things get tough, seek your resources when you need to (or before you think you need to!) and keep the long game in mind. New parenthood and breastfeeding is hard; and babies don’t come with instructions. I am such a big believer in parents knowing best for their babies, I want to empower that at any step I can. It is why I not only have a private practice where I can help you on your breastfeeding journey and help educate you about all things 4th trimester/newborn life, but I also lead our local La Leche League of Fort Collins. As a LLL Leader, I get to provide free parent-to-parent support to our community, which doesn’t replace the need for 1:1 clinical lactation support, but it meets a lot of people where they are and keeps resources available.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a proud mama of three little humans, and I also sit firmly at the table of people who struggled to conceive and lost babies along the way. I am fiercely passionate about supporting families and that we don’t have to just survive the newborn phase of life…we can actually set ourselves up to enjoy it! We are living in a time when women and families want more from their healthcare experience. We want personalized, individual care for ourselves and our babies and less of the standardized fit-in-the-box-care we’ve come to expect. I wanted my business to fit that; gone is the need to drag all your kids to get lactation support, I’ll come to you while your toddler naps in the comfort of your home.
Working in the space of new parenthood, when families are so raw and tired is sacred work. To enter in is an honor and it’s not some large facility they’re seeking help from; it’s a mom who’s gone before them. We used to live in societies where we saw our sisters and aunts and friends navigate the fourth trimester and breastfeeding and we were able to learn from them. But in our current societal set up, we’re so isolated and everyone has to figure it out on their own. Whether they’ve connected with me on social media or through our local professional network most of my clients feel like they know me before I even get to their door. I really focus on remaining true to who I am in my social and professional presence and I think that’s refreshing to a lot of people and a substantial part of why my business is thriving.
From prenatal breastfeeding education & learning how human milk works, to first latch and milk supply regulation all the way through to weaning I have you covered. I offer in home or center based appointments as well as a free breastfeeding support group.
Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
Obviously you have to be a skilled practitioner, but you also have to be good at being in community with others. You’re never going to be the only person in your field…and thank goodness! Looking at other professionals who do a similar job to you as competition is short sighted and unfair; seeing that there is more than enough work for everyone is how we all thrive. Joining professional groups, and personally seeking connection with people who offer similar services to create a network of trusted people who I can lean on, refer to and bounce ideas off of has been the best thing I have done for not only my business, but our community as a whole. We are all so much better when we realize there is more than enough room at the table for everyone.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Social media was a large part of it, but also you cannot replace in person networking. I’ve always been really passionate about the new parenthood world, and I’ve dreamt of this career for years so there’s no one better to “sell” my business than me. I do my very best to remain authentic and real, because in the end this isn’t a large company or corporation people seek to work with for their education and breastfeeding needs…it’s me. Mom of three, slightly quirky, likely to sing and/or dance at any given point, Angela. I focused on connecting within my community, I didn’t get discouraged when things weren’t easy and I trusted that this is the absolute right place for me. And it happened.
