We were lucky to catch up with Angela Castillo recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Angela, thanks for joining us today. Risking taking is a huge part of most people’s story but too often society overlooks those risks and only focuses on where you are today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – it could be a big risk or a small one – but walk us through the backstory.
The biggest risk I ever took was silencing everyone, including my inner thoughts and listening to GOD! All it took for me to take that leap of faith was for GOD to make me uncomfortable, and HE surely did.
So, in 2017, I decided to leave my corporate job for a role that I knew would only last a few years. I went from a stable career with an office and a window in The Woodlands to working in a trailer at a project site in Sunnyside. And you know what, it was the best decision I ever made, because I would have never been closer to home and family, I would have never made more money, I would have never advanced within my career, and I would have never started Castillo Financial Consulting if I had decided to stay in The Woodlands, my time there was up.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Angela Castillo the owner and creator of Castillo Financial Consulting. I am a native Houstonian and alumna from the Texas Southern University. My company’s focus is to educate and help individuals meet their financial goals. I’ve always liked numbers especially analyzing incomes, expenses and creating budgets, that is the reason I majored in accounting and started my business.
Whether is through one-on-one service, purchasing my financial planners or me being a guest speaker, my mission is to make sure individuals are able to learn about the importance of financial literacy in a convenient, consistent and relatable way. I am my proudest when my clients are excited about their results and dedication, it really motivates me to continue to run my business.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I wouldn’t necessarily call it a lesson I had to unlearn, but what I definitely had to unlearn was assuming. When it came to helping individuals with their personal finances, I found myself assuming they knew the basics of personal finances. For instance, the importance of making payments on time and how heavily it impacts your credit profile, I figured every adult knew this, but I was mistaken. I had to understand that “the basics” I learned within my household, not everyone had the same opportunity. Now I go into assuming nothing with my clients and detailing everything.
We’d really appreciate if you could talk to us about how you figured out the manufacturing process.
A few years after I started my business, I decided I not only wanted to provide a service, I also wanted to provide a product. When I initially thought of offering a financial planner to my audience, I began by to laying out everything I wanted to be included in the planner. After I figured out those details, I lucked up on finding a designer via Instagram through a childhood friend. Once my planner was finalized, the designer was able to set up my planner to be printed and purchased through a vendor/manufacturer. I think for it being my first time bringing an actual product to life, I did an awesome job. I’m currently doing research on creating an even more affordable, durable and versatile financial planner.
