We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Angela Carmean. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Angela below.
Angela, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Naming anything – including a business – is so hard. Right? What’s the story behind how you came up with the name of your brand?
I’ve always loved decorating and finding ways to make it affordable. When I decided to start out initially with affordable decorating tips on my social media accounts, I thought about what I could call it. Since my name is Angela, I thought Angela’s Affordable Decorating Tips had a nice ring to it. Now that my business has expanded to event planning, balloon design and holiday decorating (and still giving those affordable tips), I started using Angela’s Affordable Decorating & Design as my business name and brand.
Angela, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Prior to starting my business, seasonal decorating is something I really enjoyed doing in my home for the different holidays. When we moved to Collierville, TN, I wanted to think of a way I could incorporate my affordable decorating tips into a business. I was encouraged by my friends and family, so I started with providing tips on my social media pages, with links on where I got the items. Then my business expanded to making balloon garlands, event planning and holiday decorating. I think the two things I am very good at is being organized and friendly. I also always try to keep things affordable, because I don’t think it should cost a fortune to have a party, decorate a Christmas tree or purchase a balloon garland. I believe that your personality is your business card, so you will be greeted with a smile here at Angela’s Affordable Decorating & Design.
Have you ever had to pivot?
Before we moved to Tennessee, I had a Strollercize business teaching stroller fitness classes to local moms in Bluffton, South Carolina. When we moved to Collierville, I wasn’t sure if I wanted to start that business here in Tennessee or do something else. A few months after we moved, Covid hit so I decided to try something different and focus on my affordable decorating tips, which is completely different from fitness classes. I started small just providing the decorating tips on social media and then as the years have gone by, the affordable tips have turned into a decorating business. I am so grateful because decorating to me, doesn’t feel like a job. I love seeing my clients happy, and now know that my professional pivot from fitness to decor was a good choice.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
The best source of new clients has been word of mouth from my existing clients. I rarely have a new client who hasn’t heard about my business from one of my current clients. I think when you put forth a positive attitude, good work ethic and pretty designs, people start to talk about those positive types of things and want to share those experiences with their social circle.
