We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Angela Apodaca a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Angela, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. One of the most important things we can do as business owners is ensure that our customers feel appreciated. What’s something you’ve done or seen a business owner do to help a customer feel valued?
When I can give back to the community and my clients, I always try to! I have had clients supporting me since hairstyling school almost 10 years ago, and one day I wondered to myself ‘how can I show my appreciation back to clients?’
I started doing quarterly giveaways of a trio of hair products for my guests, in return asking them to write what they like about my business or what they would like to see more of whether that’s availability, extras during services, snacks etc. also starting a referral discount helps clients feel appreciated when they refer someone to you :)

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Hello! I am Angela Apodaca, owner of Angela Marie Artistry established in 2021. I am a mother of 3 littles, wife, and business owner. I started my journey in the beauty industry in 2016, I always loved doing friends hair for school dances and the creative side of hair. Out of high school, I was in school to become a nurse. My heart was always to help people and thought that would be a great path. A few years working as a CNA I realized, I like this job but I don’t love it. These patients deserve someone who loves it. Then that took me back to where my heart really wanted to be, Hairstyling. I enrolled and have had the best journey since. My clients have given me the title of ‘hairapist’ (Hair Therapist) and I still feel I get to help people in a different way.
My husband was the one who encouraged me to branch out and take the leap of starting my own business, he has been my biggest support and shoulder to lean on!
I am a lived in hair artist, meaning the styles I do are to help with longevity and look very natural and sunkissed. I am also a ‘low-tox’ stylist, using only the best color/retail products to ensure safety and less chemical exposure to everyone! I am Bellami extension certified, and love giving people the confidence they deserve through their dream hair!
I recently was recognized as Best of the Springs 2024 for hair salon, that was an amazing award nominated by the community!

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Being a hairstylist during COVID was an awfully rough time. Laid off of work, no pay, and the uncertainty of how it would change the business was nerve wrecking.
Many stylists didn’t make it through COVID unfortunately as it was hard mentally and on businesses.
Surviving that made me realize, we can get through anything!!

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Posting, posting, posting!!! Instagrams algorithm can be a tricky one to figure out, what I have noticed is that consistency helps a ton. Engaging with your clients posts as well as other stylists helps build community as well. Local Facebook groups are always looking for recommendations, that’s one of the best places to pop your IG / booking link and share a few photos of your work to grab some people’s attentions!
