We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Angel Turner a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Angel , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. One of the most important things small businesses can do, in our view, is to serve underserved communities that are ignored by giant corporations who often are just creating mass-market, one-size-fits-all solutions. Talk to us about how you serve an underserved community.
Nanna’s Country Cakes®️ Foundation serves an underserved community and we do so with humility and gratitude. Life has taught us to be grateful for the opportunity to share our love of culinary arts. We believe in quality foods, exquisite taste, and the importance of traditional family recipes. By incorporating a global perspective, we aim to introduce our community to new cultural tastes, nutritional concepts, and a sense of home.
It is our mission to bring comfort and joy to those who need it most, by providing meals that are not only nutritious and delicious, but also filled with love and warmth. We want to create a space where everyone feels welcome and valued, regardless of their background or circumstances.
Our brand values empathy, inclusivity, and the transformative power of food. We believe that by sharing our love for culinary arts and traditional family recipes, we can make a positive impact on the lives of those in the underserved community. Food is not just sustenance – it is a source of comfort, healing, and joy that brings people together.
Angel , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Nanna’s Country Cakes® brings the warmth of our grandmothers’ cooking not only to prestigious environments but also to those who need it the most – underserved households. We understand the importance of having a foundation rooted in love and connection, and we strive to provide a space where everyone feels welcomed and cared for.
Our foundation is not just about serving food – it is about building connections, fostering healing, and sharing the joy of culinary arts. It’s about providing a sense of home and belonging to those who may not have it. We believe that everyone deserves to experience the comfort and love that comes from a good meal shared with family and friends. Through our dedication to quality, tradition, and inclusivity, we hope to make a positive impact on the lives of all those we serve.
It is important to our foundation that we empathize with the need for a strong foundation in people’s lives. We believe that a foundation filled with love and a space to connect can truly be healing. That is why we bring Nanna’s warmth not only to prestigious environments, but also to those who need it the most in underserved households.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Taking the leap to start Nanna’s Country Cakes®️ was a big decision that came with its own set of challenges. One of the biggest challenges was understanding and obtaining the necessary capital to get the business off the ground. I had to learn how to secure finances to keep the business afloat and grow. Some days, I wondered how long it would take to reach the goal, but I knew that as long as I believed in the vision and put in the work, we would eventually get there.
Resilience, for me, has meant taking one step at a time and never giving up. Even when faced with setbacks, I kept moving forward. There were days when I felt like bending under the pressure, but my passion and love for Nanna’s Country Cakes® kept me agile and determined not to break.
Being a student of life has taught me to be open to learning new things, to remain humble, to have faith, and to never lose sight of the mission. Through humility, faith, and a relentless drive to fulfill my purpose, I have been able to overcome the challenges that come with running a business. The blessing of operating in my purpose has given me the strength to navigate the ups and downs of entrepreneurship.
We’d love to hear the story of how you turned a side-hustle into a something much bigger.
When I first started cooking as a form of therapy, I never imagined it would turn into a passion that would lead to a secondary source of income. I found solace in the kitchen, where I could experiment with flavors and create dishes that brought joy to myself and others. As I delved deeper into the world of cooking, I realized that my passion for feeding others was more than just a therapeutic outlet – it was a calling.
I started small, with just a portable deep fryer and two crock pots. I would cook at home and deliver meals to people complimentary. It brought me so much joy to see others enjoying my food and feeling nourished. Eventually, I sought out a business consultation to refine my strategy and develop a solid business model.
Through the consultation, I learned the importance of developing a professional infrastructure. I realized that in order to continue feeding others and making a difference, I needed to treat my culinary endeavors as a professional venture. This meant setting up a menu, establishing prices, and marketing my services effectively.
As I began to implement these changes, I was amazed at the doors that started to open. I was invited into rooms and events that I never would have imagined being a part of, all because of my passion for feeding others. What started as a form of therapy had transformed into a successful secondary source of income.
It is a reminder that sometimes our true calling may not be what we initially expect, but if we follow our passion and stay true to our purpose, amazing things can happen.
