We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Angel Stull-James. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Angel below.
Angel, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about the things you feel your parents did right and how those things have impacted your career and life.
My parents did everything right. No, they are not perfect; I know that, but in my eyes, they are perfect, and they raised me just right. I knew, and still know, love, kindness, compassion, and support. Growing up, and to this day, I know that I am loved no matter which path I take, and I have their full support even if they may not understand my decision. I know that they are there for me and are willing to help me learn and figure it out. This has impacted my life in more ways than one; it has impacted how I raise my children with the same love and compassion and support. It has impacted my career by giving me the strength to step out of my comfort zone, learn something new and take on a new career path. I am able to take risks and new adventures, knowing full well that I have the support of my parents behind me and them cheering me on.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a native of Pensacola, Florida and an honored graduate from Florida State University. I am a former child model and actress and worked in the fashion industry with numerous prominent design houses in New York City. I am a certified county mediator and licensed attorney in Florida and New York. After moving back home and working as in house lead counsel for numerous years at a local law firm, I decided to resign and focus on myself and my family. I am a mother of four, and being a mother is my greatest accomplishment and my whole world!
I have always enjoyed writing and was published at a young age, but it I was my first born (twins) who inspired me to follow my long lost passion for writing and pursue it more thoroughly. Since 2018, I have written numerous books for my kids.
I took a jump into publishing and released my first children’s book in 2018, entitled Tuesday Bluesday. “Tuesday Bluesday is about Pensacola’s hometown Blue Angels and my kids’ experience and love for the Blues at such a young age. Tuesday Bluesday portrays the Blue Angels in a positive light and depicts the excitement of our community to have the Blue Angels in our lives. The book is fun and up beat, and the rhymes are a fun read for children. Reading is such an important part of a child’s life and to begin reading at a young age is crucial.”
Fat Tuesday is the second published book in my children’s book series about the world-famous United States Navy Blue Angels C130 aircraft, which was released in 2020. Following in suit, Fat Tuesday’s rhymes are a fun read, for not only young children, but for any Fat Albert and Blue Angels fans of all ages.
The third title in the series to be released this year is entitled, A Blues Christmas.
In December 2022, at the start of the Christmas season, I suffered an unexpected injury for which I was hospitalized. My children and I typically engage in many traditions while celebrating the holiday season; however, that year brought hurdles for which I wasn’t able to engage in our normalcy. But instead of letting the hospitalization and immobility get me down, I made an effort to continue to make the season special for my babies, and turned a challenging situation into a positive and memorable one.
I was snuggled in with my babies reading Christmas books the night before an emergent surgery to save my life and limb. An idea immediately came to me, and I decided then to write A Blues Christmas for my angels.
I wrote A Blues Christmas while in the hospital. This book is a beautiful reminder that many obstacles will come your way, but it’s your journey and your decision on how to come at those obstacles and make the best of them. Learn, grow and stay positive.
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
As I explained earlier about my family and always having their support, this answer too falls in that same categorical explanation. I actually wrote Tuesday Bluesday in 2015 in a personal journal, handwritten, that I would read to just my twins. One day I read it to my mom and she continued to push me and encourage me to publish it. I was hesitant as I knew nothing about publishing a book. My mother kept telling me to believe in myself and reminded me that I was a smart girl and could figure it out. So I researched as much as I could, I talked to people, as many as I could, I asked questions, I read, etc., until I found, and felt comfortable with moving into the publishing world. But then came the question of funding. Publishing is expensive and where would I get the capital? I called my grandpa one afternoon and told him I had an idea to publish a book that I had written. With absolutely no questions asked he said don’t worry, I’ll get you the money. He believed in me and my dreams whole heartedly and that kind of support is not to be taken for granted.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I think for me the most rewarding part of what I do is when I meet a young reader who I have inspired to not necessarily be a writer, but to just follow their dream, whatever it may be. The smile and excitement on a kid’s face meeting someone they can look up to and be inspired by is truly a blessing and gift.
