We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Angel Ramon. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Angel below.
Angel, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your creative career sooner or later?
Sometimes I do wish I started my creative career sooner. With what I know now, I could’ve learned ten years ago. I was working a decent job with good hours. At the same time, I realized I wasn’t in the right head space back then. I was still in my lower twenties then, so I didn’t worry too much about the future. I would come home after work and just hang out with my friends in my downtime. I always enjoyed telling and writing stories since Junior High School.
Now that I’m 33 years old, I tell myself that maybe I needed more life experience before I became an author. There’s truth to that as compared to my previous stories, my craft has started to improve greatly. I was heading down a pretty dark path before I moved to Puerto Rico in 2015. In 2016 I decided to follow my dream of being an author. Let’s just say, that was perhaps the best decision in my life. I started reading and studying what I needed to do before becoming an independent author.
Even now, I’m still learning new stuff about the publishing process. I’m not sure if I would’ve had the patience ten years ago since I was always on the go then. So to be honest, there are days I wish I started writing early. At the same time, I might not have been ready mentally for that.

Angel, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Angel Ramon and I’m originally from Brooklyn, New York. Now I reside in Salinas, Puerto Rico. I’m an independent author who writes zombie and creature horror. I’m currently thirty-three years old and have more than twenty published works on Amazon ranging from the zombie apocalypse to mutated rats infesting a tropical island. My most popular series is Pina Coladas and Rats, which has sold over one thousand copiers over four books in only eight months. I have to say that might be my most proudest moment in my career.
I started writing stories in Junior High School. I got started in Resident Evil fan fiction. To be fair, these stories were just for school projects or my own personal use. They never made it online, which was actually a good thing because I don’t know if my twelve-year-old self was ready to have my work ripped apart by the internet. When I reached my Junior year of High School. I stopped writing as I needed to concentrate on keeping my grades up.
It wasn’t until I moved to Puerto Rico that I got my drive to write again. This time. though, I wanted to get paid for writing. So I started writing my very first short story, Angel’s Nightmare Adventure. It’s a short story that I published on Amazon in 2017 and it took off. It hit #1 in Horror Short Stories on Amazon. It was a wonderful feeling when my book hit that high. That was especially true when a few years before that I was hanging out in the streets of NYC with the wrong people. My father was proud to see that. From that point on, I vowed to keep my work ethic going. There was no way I wanted to go back to my previous life. Being a published author was always a dream of mine and I was determined to accomplish it.
As far as what people should expect from my books. They are meant for horror fans who love the undead and killer creatures. I’m a huge fan of 80’s horror, which was my inspiration for Pina Coladas and Rats. My other successful series, The Fifth Survivor was inspired by the Resident Evil video games. I aim to entertain and perhaps scare the reader with my stories. Pina Coladas and Rats is set in Puerto Rico and there’s a reason for that.
There aren’t too many stories in the horror genre that are set in Puerto Rico. So I thought it would be awesome to shout out my island in a horror story. I also want to inspire other people in my race that they should chase their dreams and not let the stereotypes get the best of them.
Overall, as another author told me, I’m in the business of entertaining people. That is what my books aim to do.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect has to be when people tell me that they not only paid for my work but enjoyed it as well. That means I’m doing my job as an entertainer. Another rewarding aspect is when I get to put the world I imagined on virtual paper (The computer). Just seeing my imagination coming to life is rewarding enough. Having people read and enjoy is a bonus that I’ve come to appreciate. Finally, when I order paperback copies of my books and hold it in my hands, that feeling never gets old.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Yes, there is. It’s a simple but powerful goal. That goal is to prove to myself and my parents that there is a better life than hanging out in the streets. I had a dream and I wanted to accomplish it. You see as a Puerto Rican, I was always told I wouldn’t amount to much because I came from a group of people who embraced mediocrity. As a successful author, I want other young people especially those who are Hispanic to know they can accomplish their dream. There is a life away from gangs, drugs, and the streets of the barrio.
I want people to know that with hard work and determination, you can make your dream happen. However, you gotta want it that badly.
