We were lucky to catch up with Angel Morgan recently and have shared our conversation below.
Angel, appreciate you joining us today. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
The thing that matters the most in terms of achieving success is being open, honest and prayerful. Don’t ever sacrifice your authenticity for other people’s approval. Stay true to yourself at all times. The right people will come your way. Rereading this question had me puzzled the most because what is success for starters. I never knew what that meant until I started to set goals as a mother. Being a mother definitely plays a big role in why I had to change my life around. After losing my biological father to cancer and my grandmother two weeks later. My life really took a turn for the worst. I had so much negativity around me. I started to deteriorate. I lost myself completely. People dying on me became something very normal in chicago. I never really knew how to cope with death. Just move on. I wasn’t allowed to feel. I wasn’t able to cry or understand completely the hurt of losing someone. Until, so many deaths hit me at once. While all this was happening I had just had my daughter going through postpartum depression, my father passed from cancer, the only person who I knew as a mother died right after my father. I was losing control of my life. And no one knew how I was feeling. I refused to let anyone know how I was feeling because I didn’t want them to think I was weak. But, I had to stay strong for my daughter though. Many nights Laying her down to sleep. I would sneak to the bathroom and cry. One night I just couldn’t get up. So, I laid there crying asking God. “WHY ME?” my daughter in my arms. My baby heard me crying and she did something someone has never done and that was wipe my tears away and said “k mama.” I laughed so hard, because here it is my baby, only two years old telling me it’s okay. My baby FEELS me. She has taught me to feel. Something I thought was impossible. And when I say feel, I mean when something in you internally changes your whole perspective of life. My relationship with God became more open and I started to pray more. My grandmother always said “he may not come when you want him but he’s always on time.”
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
Hello my name is Angel. I am CEO of Anjewls Cosmetics. I am a fun, funny, vibrant, and a city girl. I was born and raised in the Windy City of Chicago. On the South side on 45th. Growing up in Chicago it was never easy. But, somehow God had me before I even knew who he was. Amen. Poor wasn’t in my vocabulary. I was told that I lived better than most. Realizing my surroundings at a young age . We moved around quite a bit after leaving the projects. Until I came across the nicest women in the world. Mrs. Bishop. She seen how smart I was in math. I loved numbers. She asked me what did I think about running the candy store and you making my own money. I said “ my own money.” At that time I never had my own money in my life. The words sounded so good. She taught me about profit. Now when it comes to talking to people or showing people I had manners. It came to me naturally. I was gentle when needed, manner-able when needed, and always asking how was your day. I feel in love with what I was doing. It made me happy. When it comes to make up my grandmother loved a good black liner and a cherry pop lipstick or a berry purple lipstick. I thought it was the greatest thing I ever seen. Staring at her in the mirror and having conversations with her. I can see where I get it from. But being raised by my grandmother sets me aside from a lot of other kids my age. We were raised to always be respectful to elders.Yes mam or no sir. I use to use my grandmother make up in the mirror mimicking the models on T.v when they weren’t around. So I been in love with make up and business since I could remember. Seeing black women in business trigger my love to have my own business but I just didn’t know what. I started doing my YouTube channel which is Angel Morgan on YouTube. When I went to the local drug store I thought we’ll let me grab some makeup. But there wasn’t none for black girls. It had me puzzled. Because there weren’t many options for black girls . Which is why I came up the idea to have my own cosmetics line. I want to show everyone that it doesn’t matter what skin tone you are, you can wear makeup and feel beautiful.. Which is why I want my future clients to know with beauty comes confidence. With everyone face I came across tells a story. I am not just a women but a human being who understands hardships and life. I am a sister, fiancé, friend, MUA, and a mom. I connect with my customers. With every brush stroke , pat with a beauty blender, or the click of a button. Showing them that there story is beautiful and that you are strong because the end result is always Astronomically amazing. I want my clients to know that the problem I solve is to always feel beautiful. Being beautiful is a super power. When you know your beautiful, nothing or no one can hurt you. I always tell my Anjewls that being beautiful comes with in and when you know it. You give off a positive radiance to others that may make them feel it as well. Reminding my two children that they are beautiful is what I am most proud of. My business consists of eyeshadow palettes, glitter, primers, brush, lip liners, and lip gloss. I also do full glams and natural beats as well.
Any advice for managing a team?
When searching for brand ambassadors I went off of a couple key points. The way they carried themselves on social media. Such as loyalty, and integrity. My team had to have something that stuck out. While being in cosmetics. They had to love cosmetics and show content with them wearing makeup. They cannot be camera shy, because I want every girl to display a different confidence. I want my girls to be everyday girls you see instead of what people think they are supposed to look like. They have to know that being a brand ambassador is a very demanding job. They have to know that I expect high expectations from them. This is a professional job and should be treated as such. Treat them as you would want to be treated. Always show you care and congratulate them on always doing a good job. Brand Ambassadors

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I had to unlearn to detach myself emotionally from people I set certain expectations for. Such as, associates and family. Having a business will be an emotional roller coaster. You will be your biggest cheerleader and your biggest investor. Have a plan. Set a budget. Do as much research as you can about starting a business. Having a business will test your emotions. You will lose relationships but also gain some. When I first started my business I was always promoting before it came out.I got zero shares. And a couple likes. But I knew it wasn’t going to be easy trying to get exposure. I had so many people telling me that they were going to buy my product. Which made me feel so good. But when the day came, I didn’t sell one thing. Heartbreaking. I had to learn the hard way. Just because you think you know someone that says they’re gonna buy your product doesn’t mean that they will actually buy it. And they don’t have to either. I had spent more money than was needed and wasted so much inventory. Lesson learned. After taking that lesson I came back smarter and harder. Failing isn’t always a downfall. Look at it as an opportunity to grow yourself. It made me set even higher goals to achieve. Now my palettes are being placed with alot of makeup artists.
