We were lucky to catch up with Angel Laketa Moore recently and have shared our conversation below.
Angel Laketa, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
My entire career has been risk taking. Becoming an actress and deciding to move out to california where I knew no one was a huge risk. It was one that I tried to back with a lot of research and with a lot of training but at the end of the day it was still a risk. I do feel as though a lot of the things that have the most payoff are the biggest risk. Even getting married and deciding to tie yourself to one person in every way financially, legally , emotionally is a huge risk. But with all of my risk, I do the necessary research and I try to be as knowledgeable as possible then make my decision. So that at the end of the day I know what the downside is, if it doesn’t go well at least I know. And on the plus side it can completely change my life for the better.

Angel Laketa, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Angel Laketa Moore. That is how most people know me. Some people online know me as ThatChickAngel . I am an actress , comedian , content creator , host and a business owner . Alongside being a wife and mother to four boys. I have been in the entertainment space professionally since 2000 doing regional theater . Then I moved to Orange county California where I received my Masters of Fine Arts in acting. In 2006 I moved to Los Angeles California where I worked as a television and film actress and also doing commercials. And around 2009 , I entered into the online space and created ThatChickAngel. A platform where I share motherhood, womanhood , my point of view of entertainment and pop culture . Business owner wise I currently co-own a content creation business with my husband. As well as a self care product subscription box called Mama Likes . That is specifically catered to women of color also within Mama Likes I have a mentee program, where I mentor other black moms on content creation.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Listen! One thing life has taught me is that if you don’t know how to push through obstacles or adversity you will get nowhere. When I first launched Mama Likes I had no idea what I was doing. It was me , my niece who is now my assistant Victorie and my then virtual assistant Nikki. All of us were just trying to figure out what things we were supposed to buy and what the timeline should be. We had no idea if we were doing this right or wrong and to be honest we still don’t know. However in being determined to launch this box we used our resilience to push past what some might consider being novices . Or even what some might consider people that didn’t deserve to be in the room because we weren’t business women in this arena . However I had a huge goal set before me and that goal was, I wanted to create this product. That made black moms feel loved , that made them feel seen , that made them feel cared for. So resilience is what was needed to build 300 boxes to fulfill all of those boxes with no fulfillment company . It was just me and my niece taping up boxes, putting address forms , even learning how to print off the address labels, was something we didn’t know at that moment. I feel as though also being a black woman in America requires a level of resilience that I don’t think a lot of people who aren’t in our shoes can identify with. So I think that helped prepare me for the task and if I say I have a goal it is my responsibility to make it come true. Now do I add some people to my team to help me make it happen? Absolutely. But at the end of the day I am the visionary behind the vision so I have to push until the vision comes true.

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
When it comes to growing your clientele I feel like there are two things that care kin right now. One is word of mouth , that has never changed and it’s never going to change. The more you have clientele that want to tell other people about how good your service or product is, the easier it will be to gather new people. Because your circle is now growing to whatever influence your circle has. Second, is social media. I know social media seems like something that could completely go out of style one day but it isn’t right now. Use these platforms to your advantage, especially using TikTok to your advantage. A lot of people use TikTok to find out about new products, learn about new things and learn about new services. Instagram also is still a great place especially if your demographic is on Instagram , same thing with Facebook. A lot of people use a lot of their time consuming content , watching fun content or watching educational content. You just have to find a way to make your product and service fall into one of those categories. And automatically these platforms will put your content in front of new eyeballs of people that hopefully would want to try out your product.
