We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Angel Isaac a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Angel thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
I remember Dave Chappelle mentioning in an interview that in his early years starting off he would watch the working comedians & watch the open mic comedians.
It was like a type of validation cause I had already been doing just that. Having a mentor no matter what career you choose is definitely a must & mine just so happen to be Dave Schwensen (Author of “How To Be A Working Comic.”) or as I call him “Señor Dave” who taught me more about the business side of things & how to conduct myself professionally at comedy clubs.
While I began to produce shows on my own I was in search for local comedians & he recommended a hand full of comedians in our Cleveland area, one of those comics where non other than Quinn Patterson (Second City Alumn). I introduced myself to Quinn at the Funny Stop Comedy Club in Cuyahoga Falls & we have been friends ever since. He was the first comedian to take me on the road & open up for him & we would talk about sports, family & of course comedy.
Dave would continue to answer many of my questions & Quinn would help keep me working. I’ve learned so much & appreciate them both.

Angel , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Born in Cleveland & raised in Lorain Ohio I was privileged to be raised in the projects on both the west side & south side of Lorain while speaking Spanish at home & English in school amongst a beautiful diverse mix of students both foreign & domestic, I’ve learned to relate to a wide range of audiences.
I had an amazing 6th grade teacher by the name of Mrs. Richey that aloud me to tell jokes in front of the class. She later told me it was because I was the funniest in the class & I at times interrupted everyone, it was apparently a trade off for me to settle down for the remainder of the day if she let me get it out & soak in the attention at the beginning of the day. I had no idea but I appreciate her for it instead of just sending me to the office. Till this day we still remain in close contact & actually would like to apologize to her for all that energy & love her for not giving up on us…non of us.
I currently preform both publicly & privately & help event centers & venue coordinate planning & producing comedy shows & verity shows as well.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
There’s some kind of weird narrative when following the word “Comedian” it’s as if people love meeting comedians but are skeptical of comedy clubs.
Comedians tend to have a following but I plan to not only create a creative space for many artists but encourage stand up comedy fans to bring someone who’s never been to a comedy club. Even try catching a new comedian you never heard of. No arena, theater, or corporate setting compares to the setting of an actual comedy club. The clubs need you all & we need them. Laughter is known as the best medicine & that continues to be true today. 30 minutes of laughter is equivalent to 2 hours of sleep so enjoy.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Meeting audience members who complement your craft is extremely rewarding. I had a lady who said she wanted a picture with me but couldn’t because she had peed her pants (as she pointed down to the wet spot), a gentle told me to keep it up & he’ll be on the look out for me, another sent me a check (just out the blue) cause he read about the struggles of other comedians.
Of course meeting one of my favorites like John Leguizamo & Patrice O’Neal is a perk in its self. I’ve met some amazing comics I call my brother like Tony Roberts (Motor Mouth from Detroit) & his wife who treated me like a star before I was working most clubs & deep conversations with Alex Ortiz (Got Jokes from Chicago) & Mark Viera (Comic View from New York) & the late Erik Meyers (Hulu from Florida) even hung out back stage with the band “War” & they shared the stage & stories with me & really opened my eyes to this crazy business.
