Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Angel Hunter . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Angel, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear how you think where to draw the line in terms of asking friends and family to support your business – what’s okay and what’s over the line?
I don’t really feel like it’s necessary to ask your family and friends to support your business because if they support you, you shouldn’t have to ask. Introducing them to your business should be enough. I personally have not asked family or friends to support me but don’t see a problem with it.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Angel Hunter. I have been in the hair industry for about 4 years now. Back in 2019, I did some box braids on my best friend. The outcome was horrible lol but I wanted to get better so I kept going. While in college, I took on clients part-time as a braider. I became more interested in doing hair than attending college so I decided to drop out and pursue hair full time. In 2021 when the Covid pandemic began, I stopped doing hair. Once salons were given the okay to reopen, that is when I resumed. The first shop I worked in was in eastpointe but I left the shop after about 2 months. In search of a new salon, I found a shop on 6 mile and Meyers. I worked there for a year. In the first 11 months of working, I was able to make 5 figures. Understanding how lucrative the hair business was, I decided to look into cosmetology school. I wanted to learn more about natural hair and offer more services to my clients so I enrolled at David Presseley, located in Royal oak, Michigan. I attended David Presseley in 2021-2023. While in school, I worked at another hair salon part time but decided to leave the salon due to me feeling like I was not showing up 100% for my clients. For the time I was in school, I worked at temporary jobs and did hair out of my basement. I graduated in March 2023 and have been working at a new salon located in downtown Detroit every since. I am currently rebuilding my clientele so it has definitely been a journey since I graduated.

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
The social media apps I use are instagram. TikTok and Facebook. I make sure I am not limiting my audience reach by only posting on one app. I share on all three and have successfully received clients from all of them. As far as my presence, I post personal things such as pictures of me, videos of me getting ready for the day, cleaning up, etc. By doing that, I am building trust and making my page more interesting. I always post pictures and videos of my work. By posting videos, I am able to reach more people due to video posting being very popular. Pictures are always good to have because that is equivalent to having a pro folio. My advice to those looking to build a social media presence is to be yourself, post your work and be consistent. Be unique when posting your content. Being unique is one of the reasons people will come to visit your page. Always post your work no matter what. If you focus too much on aesthetic, you may be missing out on content. Lastly, being consistent is very important. If you wait too long in between the times you are posting, you can get shadow banned. Being shadow banned can prevent people from seeing your post, which can result in losing potential clients.

What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Best source of clients has come from using hash tags on social media. Majority of my clients have mentioned looking for hairstylist by searching up different hashtags.
