Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Andy Shaw. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Andy, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Are you able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen?
Earning a full-time living from my artwork.
Andy, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a contemporary visual artist producing paintings and drawings. Since joining Saatchi Art in 2016 I have successfully sold my work to clients worldwide. My work is diverse including both realism and abstract and has a ‘Pop Art’ feel to it. Subject matters include dogs, landscapes, modern homes, flamingos. This sounds random but really I never think about ‘Brand’ as this can be be very restrictive for an artist. I believe that Art is about freedom and if I had a chalk board that would be the first thing I would write on it. In the past I have worked with many galleries in the early 90’s having successful exhibitions selling to David Bowie. I also sold many large paintings to Marco Pierre White for his Soho London restaurants.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is not to be afraid to experiment. I have a Design background and am consciously and unconsciously looking at things all the time. In the home, on tv, in shops, art shows , other artists, the vast landscape of art and design. Sometimes I like repeating what I have done or come back to later. Art materials and techniques and methodology always interest me and I like to experiment and come up with new things, new ideas. I find it really rewarding when a new painting comes together because I thought about it as just an idea like a designer would going about solving a problem.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Instagram is the best social media presence for creatives as you have control over visual identity/artwork and the story you want to communicate.
