We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Andy Nolasco a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Andy, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
It started in high school funny enough when I was asked “what do you want to do when you graduate’ I had never given much thought till then, but i always loved listening to music and was really set in the old saying do what you love so i started doing some research. Discovering that most artist didn’t own the rights to their own music or had overly complicated contracts that not only left them with little to no royalties and in most cases ridicules contract lengths. I thought that was the most absurd thing ever especially because it is the artist creativity that we enjoy when listening to music, so the fact that artist getting little to nothing for something as unique and moving as music didn’t sit right with me! So i had a mindset of starting my own record label where the artists and artistic freedom are at the forefront. Setting out to tackle the problem you hear from most major artist of creativity being limited the pressures that come from the executives breathing down their necks and the ownership of music a model completely unheard of. Striving to changing a formula that has been the industry’s standard for years.
Andy, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Iv always like helping regardless of how major or miner the role. Being left with a feeling of satisfaction and accomplishment when being able assist someone in their goals, so I thought to myself “how can I be the biggest help to a recording artist?” Through my research i found out that the audio engineer is one of the most crucial roles when it comes to the music industry. they help not only record, mix, master tracks, but in a lot of instances guide, and help develop tracks and artists Another big hindrance in the music industry is the cost for studio time it is a very costly process and most cannot afford it without major backing leaving amazing talent undiscovered. Realizing that my approach and prospective is always a place of the creativity first. Willing to work with those that might not have the biggest budget or financial backing, but never compromising the highest standard in quality. That is alway my goal when people inquire about Heart Break Records that we are not just trying to take your money and get you out the door, but applying an attention to detail, service and quality that you wouldn’t be able to get anywhere els.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I had someone that I regarded as family more than a friend we were going to build this business together and show everyone that this was more than a pipe dream, but turned out his intentions where the exact opposite. This devastated me sending me into a downward spiral of depression and questioning everything wondering what i was going to do. left without a studio that i had poured countless recesses into I took a step back and realized that my dreams and goals are not attached and set to a single space or person, but are apart of me and can never be taken away. With countless support from those that where truly there for me I decide this was just a new begging that tings will be better and greater than they ever where!
Any advice for managing a team?
Always have clear and defined expectations and hold everyone to those said expectations especially yourself. Your team will look to you always, so be very continuous of your actions because they will look to your habits, attitude, and behavior first. Always be willing to listen to your team you never know what great ideas could be hiding and just need a push of encouragement or just be heard to raise the team to a whole new level.
