We were lucky to catch up with Andy Martin recently and have shared our conversation below.
Andy, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s talk legacy – what sort of legacy do you hope to build?
Providing Capacity Building to National Parks is a rewarding task: their Rangers become more proficient at protecting the area and the number of crimes against wildlife usually decrease in a matter of months.
Every single murder prevented is a life saved, it’s a light of hope for the future of our planet: that’s my legacy.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
My name is Andy Martin, since 2007 i’ve been dedicating my life to Conservation and specifically to AntiPoaching, where both my military\private security background and my degree in bio-chemistry makes the difference. People often think this is a simple job, which requires just some military experience: well, it couldn’t be farther from the truth and that’s one of the reasons why animal traffickers rarely find any opposition.
My job is to provide capacity building to National Parks and Private Reserves, offering solutions to their unique needs and making their rangers more motivated and able to face the challenges of their duty.
I provide these services both in terms of contract and pro bono, through a non-profit organization called Conservation Rangers Operations Worldwide Inc.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I’ve seen dozens improvised AntiPoaching Instructors messing things up in the last decade, i’m proud to say i’m one of the very few still in the industry after over 15 years of commitment in a dozen Countries. I believe the word Commitment, as i see my job as a calling, is the reason why i’m considered amongst the best in my job worldwide.
Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
I’m used to work with hundreds people having very different culture and background, and even if it can be stressful sometimes, i must say that every single one of them has some unique skill that can turn useful. Understanding people, discovering their unique gift and putting it to good use while including a rewarding system is my way to managing people and keep their morale high.
