We recently connected with Andy Huang and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Andy, thanks for joining us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
In order to get the most out of a craft that you’re pursuing, having a personal interest on top of your professional interest is essential to accelerate your progress and learning. Your mind retains and learns much more quickly when what you are learning is not only professionally important, but also personally important to your interests. In the past, I have always mostly only taken projects that I have been interested in artistically and subject matter wise. In the projects which I did not take a personal interest in, the project was not only grueling, but also slow and hard to progress because I simply did not have the intrinsic motivation layered on top of an extrinsic motivation, such as money or fame. Your best work comes when you have both motivators at the same time. As a 3D artist with over 9 years of experience working in 3D software, I would say the most important skill to have is to always get the fundamentals down first. For example, as a character artist, learning anatomy is important to getting characters to look correct. Diving straight into making complex characters without an understanding of anatomy always ends in poor results, especially because the human brain is evolved to perceive the slightest facial and bodily differences. The same applies to running a business or becoming skilled at any trade. You may end up redoing things that should have been done right the first time. Going back to properly relearn something almost always ends up taking more time.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Hello! I’m Andy Huang and I’m a 3D artist in the game and film industry with 9+ years of experience working in 3D and past experience at companies such as Ubisoft. I’m known as @Zenith_3D on Instagram, where I post some of my art. I primarily post realistic weapon and character art. I’ve always been an artist prior to doing 3D, as I would draw a lot when I was a kid, primarily dragons, trucks, and trains. I’m most proud of the work I do with creating art for games, as I love games and I love the feeling that millions of people get to feel immersed in a new reality that is expanded from our own. I like creating props and characters that people can feel inspired and intrigued by. Whether it’s film, games, or tech visualizations, my passion is creating high quality 3D assets that can project your idea forward to the highest fidelity imaginable. If you have a project or idea that requires high quality 3D visuals, my expertise is providing you with that!
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
If there is a vision or idea that needs to be put forward, having an artist or creative on the team is the best way to push that idea out on to the world. Visuals are one of the first things people notice about a product, and is also an indicator of the quality of the a product. By hiring artists on your business for this, you can support your company and also the amount of quality art in the world.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I like seeing quality art. It brings forward a myriad of positive emotions: Inspiration, joy, wonder, awe, and pride. I believe art is a human need and easily accessible media such as films, games, shows, and videos helps bring all of this positivity to the world. Whether it’s culture, inspiration, or just leisure, I think it is a positive force for the world. In creating high quality art, I not only satisfy my own needs, but the needs of people around the world, and bring something positive to their lives.
