We recently connected with Andy Denson and have shared our conversation below.
Andy, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
The most meaningful projects I’m working on our two films. One of the films is called Lucring and it’s a dramatic biopic sort of a retelling of my mom’s life growing up in the Philippines, moving to Singapore in the 80s meeting potential suitors through penpal services her sister recommended, and then eventually marrying my father and moving to the US in the early 90s. The other project is a film that has now become a television series, called king of the Philippines, which follows a character loosely based off of me and his travels to the Philippines in search of clarity after graduating college. So for the pass five years, I’ve been going back-and-forth between the US and Cebu Philippines, to get both of these projects from pre-production into production, and along the way I’ve really established a deeper connection with myself as a man who is half Filipino and also black American. I think it was super important for me to make this decision to go beyond my comfort zone to take on these projects because they touch on a subject matter, my mom, her journey, and her struggles, and her joys and triumphs. With my television series, king of the Philippines, I wanted to write a character that I’ve never really seen before and that a lot of people can relate to you of being from America then having a chance to really investigate and delve into the other culture that they’re connected with. And I think these themes of telling stories of your parents or your cultural identities or identifiers in general, I have such an impact on me and I know that with works, I’ve seen in the past those also resonate with me.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
