We were lucky to catch up with Andria Rose recently and have shared our conversation below.
Andria , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
I’ve been writing ever since I was a little girl. I would always carry a notebook where I’d jot down poetry or journal entries. I always found the process of writing to be very therapeutic. When I was around ten years old, I started learning guitar and writing instrumentation and melodies to accompany my words. Oftentimes I’d stay up until the sun was rising just trying to finish a song I had started writing hours prior. Through trial and error, and figuring out what my creative process entailed, I eventually began to get better at my craft. I can become very obsessive over a song, to the point where I need every last detail to be perfect or else my mind does not rest. I’ve kind of always been that way, which I think is the reason I am where I am today. I care so much about my craft and my art itself, I put everything that I have to offer, all in. At the same time, I think being such a perfectionist may hinder me at times because it ends up being that I won’t release new content if I do not feel like it is up to par; which is not necessarily a bad thing, but my dilemma is that I am my biggest critic, and I never really do quite think anything that I make is perfect. It could always be better. I’ve had to come to terms with the fact that perfectionism does not exist. I’ve found that everyday comes with something new to learn.
Andria , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Andria Rose and I’m a Mexicana singer, songwriter and producer from San Antonio, Texas. I aim to create music that is very dreamy and feels like velvet. My favorite color is red; and visually, I love the allure and eye catching nature of the color- I try to embody that in my work. I primarily write music in English, but I do like to throw in some Spanish every now and then to pay homage to my culture. I grew up listening to Selena and Nancy Sinatra records, which I think is the reason, stylistically, I turned out to be the artist I am today. I’ve toured/opened for various artists including Kali Uchis and The Marias, My most recent EP ‘Telenovela’ has been recognized by publications such as Billboard, NPR, Elite Daily and others. Live, I have a 5 piece band and we usually play between San Antonio and Austin at the moment. Overall, I like to keep to myself, coming out of my shell when I’m on stage.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My main objective in being an artist and creating music is for it to mean something- not just to me, but to somebody else. I want my music to resonate with someone and I want my words to speak to them. The power of music and it’s capability to heal is incredible. There is nothing I love more than writing music and performing it, sharing it. It is such a vulnerable thing, to put yourself out on display for everyone to see your emotions and who you are as a person. Throughout my life, there have always been those artists or those songs that I turn to when I’m needing comfort or solace; and If I could be that or do that for somebody else, my dreams are fulfilled.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being an artist is getting to see your art in fruition, and the recognition it receives. For example, I remember the first time I was added to an official Spotify playlist, I cried of pure happiness and joy. Prior to that moment. being in one of those playlists and recognized by Spotify felt like something I could only hope for. The milestones and the connections I’ve been able to make because of my music still feels surreal to me sometimes. I am forever grateful that the music somehow finds it’s way to the ears of so many people around the world. I’ll get messages or emails from people in places like Japan saying how they stumbled across my music and are new fans. It’s rewarding to know that the countless days, months or even years spent on a record do not go unnoticed.
