We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Andrew Weaver a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Andrew, thanks for joining us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I learned a lot about what I do from the internet, specifically YouTube. It’s where I learned to sing and play guitar. I would spend hours (and still do) watching guitar tutorials and vocal warm ups from random people across the world on YouTube. Many musicians I’ve met throughout the years have benefited from what we jokingly call “YouTube University”. Any skill a person would like to learn is probably on YouTube somewhere as a tutorial, much like studying in College. Content creators on the internet are an amazing resource to young musicians and artists everywhere.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a 20 year-old singer/songwriter from Bremen, Georgia. I have been working as a gigging musician since I was 13 around the Atlanta area. I also have a passion for music production and enjoy producing my own music as well as others. I truly got into this industry after auditioning for the TV Show “American Idol” back in 2018. After receiving a “Golden Ticket” and going to Hollywood I was eliminated from the competition during Hollywood Week. I am truly grateful for all the doors Idol has opened up for me. After appearing on the show, I came back to Atlanta and began writing and recording my own original music. So far, I have released 15 songs which are available on all streaming platforms. In addition to recording music, I also gig at a variety of places from wineries to festivals.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist/creative for me is having a piece of myself captured in audio form for basically forever. I am one of the first generations of creatives with a platform like the internet for songs, videos, and other creative projects to live on. Streaming services such as Spotify, Apple Music, and Soundcloud are places where my work can live for years to come. I enjoy looking back at the records I made as a 16-year-old because they were an accurate representation of where my artistry was back then. All in all, it’s rewarding to look back at projects I have been apart of so far. I’m excited to release new songs and have them join the rest of my discography online.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I would say my one goal on my creative journey is to produce things I am proud of. I always wanna be honest through my songs and tell a story of where I was/what I was feeling at that specific time. When recording music it’s important to capture the certain energy you are chasing in the track.
