We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Andrew Trego. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Andrew below.
Hi Andrew, thanks for joining us today. Do you feel you or your work has ever been misunderstood or mischaracterized? If so, tell us the story and how/why it happened and if there are any interesting learnings or insights you took from the experience?
Absolutely. I’m primarily a wedding DJ. When I tell people that, they immediately envision the lame, out-of-touch guy in the corner with a Men’s Warehouse matching tie and vest and bunch of random cheap lights that you could find at Spencer’s gift store. It’s a tough stigma. But I fell in love with telling the couple’s story. Serving them. Uniting their crowd and making it the best celebration possible. That includes pushing the envelop and often making the wedding look and feel more like a club than a standard reception hall. I welcome people judging me off the bat because I will shatter their expectations.
Andrew, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I grew up always trying to make people around me laugh and smile. Singing, dancing, acting, comedy, improv – all of it. I did that all throughout high school and college. Got my Bachelor’s Degree in Musical Theatre and six days later started rehearsals for Disney Cruise Line. I performed one contract in the Caribbean, met some amazing people, and didn’t think I would be back. Then they offered me the Mediterranean and I thought I would stick around. I’m glad I did because I got to see the world and meet my wife, Jessi. Retrospectively. I realized that Disney helped cement my love for performing for people with a purpose – make others lives’ better through performing. After that contract, we decided to move to Greater LA. As Jessi continued to work at Disneyland, I was doing all sorts of jobs, auditioning, doing commercial work, along with being a Universal Studios Tour Guide.
As a semi-directionless young 20-some, I wanted to use my talents and enjoyment of performing in my career but I didn’t quite know how to get there. I remember writing down in a notepad, “Should I host events for money?” And that kind of stuck, within six months, I found myself in a DJ academy class with a company that took raw talent and turned them into professional private-event DJ/MCs. I don’t know if your purpose is written in the sky or anything but after 300 plus weddings and hundreds of other events, I feel like I have found the closest thing possible to my purpose. I got the same warm fuzzy feeling back when I worked for Disney. Two people in love are spending all this time, energy, money – all wrapped up in stress for one of the most anticipated days of their lives – and I know just by my being there, I can take that stress and allow them to have the best day of their lives. I take as much pride in my service and professionalism as my mixing and MCing capabilities and that seems to be rare in my category. On my personal timeline, Jessi and I got engaged in 2016, Married in 2017. Moved back to the East Valley, where she is from in 2018. Had our daughter in 2019. And started my own DJ/MC company, TREGOtheDJ, in 2020.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
100 percent the couples I serve. That’s why I love what I do, it’s not about me. If ZERO people remember my name at the end of the night but everyone had a phenomenal time, I did my job. I’m demonstrating my talents FOR other people.
We’d love to hear your thoughts on NFTs. (Note: this is for education/entertainment purposes only, readers should not construe this as advice)
The technology is fascinating. I was just listening to a podcast with an expert; he’s convinced the technology is there but the application is not. It’s not just going to be speculative trading of random pieces of art to try to make a buck. We have not even begun to wrap our minds around everything that’s going to happen but it’s exciting and if anyone has an idea about where the application of the technology is going, hit me up!
