We were lucky to catch up with Andrew Nucatola recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Andrew, thanks for joining us today. Let’s talk about social media – do you manage your own or do you have someone or a company that handles it for you? Why did you make the choice you did?
I manage all of my own social media channels! I studied New Media Communications in college and have worked in digital marketing and social media for my entire professional career; I love creating content and adapting to trends. I think the best advice to give anyone is not to be afraid to try something new with your socials. We fall into the idea of “I have to post a Reel” or “this doesn’t match my feed”, but sometimes the post you don’t expect to do well ends up getting you the most reach and engagement. It’s all trial and error, even when you’ve been doing it for 7 years.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’ve always loved pop culture – pop music, movies, TV, all of it. I’ve always loved the way media can make you feel. There’s something so comforting to me that no matter what changes in your life, your favorite song always sounds the same, and your favorite movie always ends the same way. You can move across the country, lose friends, change jobs – you can change everything about yourself- but your favorite album will always be just the way you left it.
I found myself becoming the “pop culture friend” in middle and high school – the friend everyone would text, asking about what was going on with celebrities or who this new Taylor Swift song was about. My friends would come to me and ask for new music recommendations, and I found myself burning CD’s for them or lending them a copy to burn to their iPod (dating myself here). Sharing media and music became one of my greatest love languages because I knew how it made me feel, and I hoped my friends would feel the same way listening to the music I shared with them.
In college, I was in a Digital Storytelling course, and one of our assignments was to create a podcast. My show was called ‘What’s Poppin’ with Andrew,’ the show where we’re quenching all of your pop culture thirsts. I submitted the project and went on with my life as such because who can start a podcast without any experience? Spoiler alert: Anyone can.
The idea of starting a show had lingered in the back of my mind for years, but I never thought about actually pulling the trigger until I was at my going-away party at a job that I hated. Someone asked, “What’s your dream job?” and I said, “Hosting a pop culture podcast.” I hadn’t thought about hosting a show in years but for some reason, that’s the first thing that came to mind. A little less than a year later, I launched Too Pop to Handle.
I’m most proud of my consistency and the dedication I have to the show. I truly love recording every week and get so excited to hear feedback each week. In my first year, I exceeded 10,000 downloads and have almost doubled that number in just 3 months.
I want my listeners to know that this isn’t just a hobby for me; it’s a passion. I love to talk about music and what’s going on in the pop culture sphere. There’s so much negativity in the world, and I use my time recording to unplug from the world and just yap about things that don’t need to be so serious. It’s truly the best hour of my week!
We’d love to hear about how you keep in touch with clients.
Building a community is one of my main goals with Too Pop to Handle. I want to create a space where people who love pop culture as much as I do can talk about their favorite artists and celebrate music/movies/TV without feeling judged. Aside from uploading weekly podcast episodes, I also have a weekly newsletter on Substack, where I share additional pop culture news and writings like ranking albums, sharing songs, and talking about what I’m watching each week.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
When someone tells me they listened to a new artists or watched a new show because of something I said or wrote. I truly get such joy out of sharing these things with my friends and audience so when I have someone DM me saying they started a show because of the podcast or bought tickets to a concert after I mentioned an artist and they fell in love with them – it’s so rewarding.
