We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Andrew Maffettone. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Andrew below.
Alright, Andrew thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Do you manage your own social media?
As a full-service marketing company, of course, we manage our own social media in-house. However, prior to starting BlueTuskr, I’ve hired social media agencies and contractors before. There are pros and cons to both, but, even as a marketing company, I often find social media can be best if it’s possible to keep in-house. I’m a big fan of outsourcing to keep my costs down until I can figure out a strong process that works well, then I do what I can to bring it in-house so it can be better focused on and also allow us to pivot quicker if needed.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I’ve been in e-commerce digital marketing for a little over 15 years now. I started BlueTuskr, a full-service marketing company for e-commerce sellers, because when I was in-house I found myself spending more time trying to get the different marketing agencies and contractors to work together than I actually did doing my job. I realized there was a need for a full-service marketing company but one with specialists, not generalists. We act as an outsourced marketing department and allow e-commerce sellers to leverage all aspects of a full marketing department without needing to pay for multiple in-house employees or worry about managing contractors.
One of the things I’m most proud of as of right now, is since our inception, we’re now up to 10 full-time employees on payroll and we have had zero turnover. I love that we’ve built a culture where not only are employees happy and feel like their growing, but because we act as an extension of our client’s business, we get to leverage that same culture and improve the working relationship with our clients and their employees as well.
Can you talk to us about how your side-hustle turned into something more.
I actually exited a 7-figure e-commerce marketing agency in late 2019, I stayed on with the business that acquired us for a few months, and then I decided I wanted to go back in-house. I started BlueTuskr, knowing one day I would want to do it full-time, but it started off as a side hustle. I started doing some podcasts and making content and the business that I was working for found out. Even though we were having some of the best marketing results they’ve ever had and I offered to stop making content, they thought I wasn’t passionate enough about their business so they fired me.
I’m now the only owner of a 7-figure marketing agency and still growing like a weed, so needless to say, I’m glad I was fired.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
While our model is different in the fact that we’re almost like a several marketing agencies in one, our biggest differentiator is with our strategy. While we don’t implement this for everyone, we do have a strong focus on omnichannel marketing strategies and working with e-commerce sellers who want their marketing initiatives to help with not only their website sales, but any marketplaces they may be on as well. We develop strategies that allow us to pivot the marketing initiatives to promote their product on Amazon, Walmart, Wayfair, their own site, really anywhere that the product is availble
