We recently connected with Andrew Lux and have shared our conversation below.
Andrew, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Have you been able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen? Was it like that from day one? If not, what were some of the major steps and milestones and do you think you could have sped up the process somehow knowing what you know now?
So I’m very close to a point where I’m using music to pay for full time living. It started in 2020 when I was financially broke and I was reaching out to people if they needed help in their music. Before I even spoke with them I actually made a song I knew they would love so when I showed them an example of what I could make for them they were more interested. Using that strategy is more powerful than saying “I can make stuff like” when I can show them immediately. I also got into teaching which has been rewarding because its great to solve a problem they’ve been stuck on or even learning from them as well. If they have a question I can’t answer I’ll look it up and find it. I think helping others has also benefited me so I recommend it!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
A lot of this music field is luck and taking chances. My first real opening gig was at Soundcheck in D.C. and I got it through a DJ mix competition. When I won I was asked if I knew how to use CDJ’s and I said yes! But I had no damn clue how to use them, let alone even seen a pair physically haha. I asked everywhere and everyone if they had any to rent or borrow and no luck. So I had 2 choices, pay off my truck or buy a pair of CDJ’s, and I chose the CDJs baby! So really I acted like I belonged in a position I wasn’t ready for but made it work. If you get an opportunity you aren’t ready for, don’t just say no because you’re scared you might not be ready. You’ll never be ready until you push yourself to be.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Yes, my childhood trauma and wanting to feel loved.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
To take that extra step and leave the social media app to listen to their song. And I mean actually listen, not skip to the drops. I started making entertaining videos with every song to incentivize viewers to listen and it’s been pretty fun and seeming to work. I’ve now dressed in a french fry costume, gotten slapped in the face with peanut butter, and made fruit talk.
