Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Andrew Laufers. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Andrew , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your business sooner or later
I started my law firm on July 22, 2022. I had been working for various law firms for the bulk of my twenty-five-year career. I had my own solo practice previously in a small town which I shut down to pursue a job at a firm.
Last year, I reached the point in my career where I knew I could provide better service to clients on my own than with a firm. On my own, I can focus on my client’s needs and do not have to worry about a firm’s needs. I absolutely love being able to provide the best experience possible for clients. I also get to work with my wife who helps with business side of thing so I can spend more time practicing law.
I wish I would have had the courage to start my own firm earlier. I am very happy with my firm. It is the best professional decision I ever made.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
For the past twenty-five years I have represented clients in family law disputes in Minnesota and Wisconsin. I help people in family law disputes including custody cases, high asset divorces, divorces with a small or mid-size business, spousal maintenance and child support, and family law appeals. The goal for me is to help clients find a way to move forward in a way that preserves their relationships with their children and family and preserves their wealth. Ultimately, I care about families and want them to succeed in their new formation.
My wife and I are the two employees of Laufers Legal Services. Our slogan is your trusted adviser during turbulent times. We want you and your family to make it through the turbulent times and to a successful new future.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I had dreamed to making partner at my law firm. When I realized that was not something that was going to happen, I decided to open my own law firm. It was the best decision I ever made. As the saying goes, sometimes when a door closes another door opens.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I believed that the pinnacle of a law practice was making partner in a law firm and following a traditional path. This is something that is told to you in law school and by my family. Culturally we all view the show Suits as a model of a successful lawyer.
But that is not the only truth. I learned that being a solo lawyer in a specialized practice is just as fulfilling as being in a larger firm. Being able to help people in the way you know best is just as honorable as being a partner in a major law firm.
I am so excited to serve clients in my solo family law firm and I hope to be open for many more years.
