Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Andrew Imber. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Andrew, thanks for joining us today. Is there a lesson you learned in school that’s stuck with you and has meaningfully impacted your journey?
College was the perfect outlet for me to work on my craft. As an aspiring broadcaster, I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to announce every sport at a D1 school (Florida Atlantic). The experiences that I gained in college were instrumental in helping me figure out what I wanted to do, and also gave me the practical experience that carried over into real world application. I highly encourage everyone to use school to get as much opportunity as possible.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a public address announcer for a number of different professional, collegiate, and high school sports organizations. For those unfamiliar, I’m basically the voice of an arena or stadium that updates the fans about the scoring plays, and gets them hyped for the home team. It’s really an underrated part of the game experience, but it’s often not realized until you’ve had either a really good or really bad example. I am most proud to have announced over 300 professional sporting events, and around 500 events total.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
A number of years ago, when the dream of being a professional announcer was way more dream than reality, I announced a college game on Halloween. Nobody showed up, and I kind of felt like I had missed out on the fun of the holiday to go work for nobody. It was also a reminder, at the time, that the dream was still really far away. However, I embraced the saying “in order to look good in front of millions, you have to outwork millions in front of nobody.” I tried not to care much about who was there after that. I just trusted that the right people would hear me eventually, and they did.
Can you talk to us about how your side-hustle turned into something more.
Up until recently, announcing really was my side hustle. I used to do everything from personal training, to marketing, to content writing, in order to pay the bills. Announcing was always kind of that fun thing to do for about 50 nights a year. But, through the right connections and networking, I was able to increase from one job to about half a dozen, and my calendar filled in a lot more. There is still room to grow, but the growth that has already occurred is extremely exciting.
