We were lucky to catch up with Andrew Buckner recently and have shared our conversation below.
Andrew, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
In 2017 I released a solo mandolin EP “Coffee and a Good Book” and continued this series with 2023’s instrumental guitar record, “Coffee and a Good Book Vol. II.” Both projects were born out of passion and a desire to create music that was reflective, intimate, and real. This latest EP was recorded with an analog-style sound, minimal overdubs, and a live feel. I’m excited to share it!
Andrew, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I began playing guitar at age 14 and the instrument has been an obsession ever since. Through session work, live performances, writing sessions, and solo albums, music directs, settles, and shapes my life. As a guitarist, I work in a variety of settings including solo instrumental performances, bands gigs, and recording studios.
I currently perform as lead guitarist for the talented new country duo Caleb & Leann. Legendary country icon Keith Stegall produced the C&L releases, and fans seems to be connecting with our writing and his work.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
Allowing societal pressure to shape my journey was a mistake I made early in my career. I realized eventually that my heroes didn’t play by conventions or sign off on their lives being dictated by likes, views, societal norms, or industry pressure. As a result, I seek to make music that is authentically me at every given opportunity.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Seeing a crowd respond to a solo, or hearing a listener comment on a recording is the most uplifting part of my artistic life. Not only is it encouraging and validating, it gives me tangible proof that my work is resonating and (hopefully) being a source of light in the world.
