We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Andrew Bernett. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Andrew below.
Hi Andrew, thanks for joining us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
My journey to developing Bee Well Therapeutics has been paved with calculated risks. From pursuing a chemistry degree to working in industries ranging from cardiac research, pharmaceuticals to jet engine assembly, I’ve consistently pushed beyond my comfort zone. These experiences, while varied, provided invaluable training in areas like clinical trials, waste reduction, electrical systems, and driving measurable results. This diverse background, built on a foundation of risk-taking, ultimately prepared me to take the biggest risk of all: launching my own business and bringing this life-changing medical device to market. I wouldn’t be where I am today without embracing those earlier challenges.
Andrew, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I invented Bee Well Therapeutics treated material after watching my wife, a board-certified dermatologist, wake up several times in the middle of the night scratching her hands from severe eczema. Like most patients with hand eczema, she would apply creams or ointments, then apply white cotton gloves in an attempt to keep the moisturizer directly on her skin. For those of you who have suffered with eczema, psoriasis, or dry skin and tried this method before, you know that the white cotton gloves quickly soak up everything you apply, leaving little product to actually soak into your skin.
With my Chemistry Degree and my wife’s dermatology knowledge, I was able to develop a product that will bring relief to your dry, cracked skin. The secret is in the beeswax treated cloth, which forms a minimally absorptive, but still breathable barrier between your skin and the outside world. This allows your topical products (creams, ointments, or prescriptions) to stay where they are needed the most, on your skin!
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
My time at General Electric instilled in me a fundamental truth: customer satisfaction drives success. This principle has become even more crucial since I started my own business. Selling a valuable, beneficial product like Bee Well Therapeutics requires a commitment to education, transparency, and exceptional customer service. Our materials are truly unique, offering unparalleled reusability—up to 90 uses for most products—a feature unmatched in the market. I prioritize honesty in my product explanations, avoiding overpromising for the sake of a sale. This commitment extends to personalized customer service: a few weeks after a purchase, I personally call each customer to ensure their satisfaction and hear firsthand how our products are making a positive impact on their lives.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
My journey developing Bee Well Therapeutics has been a testament to resilience, particularly when facing resistance from established experts in the medical field. Introducing a novel medical device naturally invites scrutiny, and I’ve learned that some hesitation can stem from various sources. Rather than reacting defensively, I focus on understanding the root of each concern. Knowing that years of work have gone into these materials, it’s easy to become emotionally invested. However, I’ve cultivated resilience by fostering open communication within my team. My wife, a dermatologist, and other physician colleagues provide invaluable, honest feedback on any perceived issues. This collaborative problem-solving approach has been crucial in overcoming obstacles and solidifying our commitment to Bee Well Therapeutics
