We were lucky to catch up with Andrew Antonucci recently and have shared our conversation below.
Andrew, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I’ve known ever since I was 11 years old. I had music in my life from a young age because my father was a drummer, but I never really paid much attention until I became a bit older. What really did it for me was my discovery of bands like Green Day, My Chemical Romance and Avenged Sevenfold. The latter being the reason I play guitar. I originally was thinking about being a bass player because I was so interested in Mike Dirnt from Green Day and his style, power, just the way he played in general. However, not long after that I heard Avenged Sevenfold for the first time and knew I wanted to play guitar and be a musician. Seeing the things that my favorite bands as a whole were doing and the shows, the crowds, the gear, everything made me fall more and more in love with it and that’s when I really pressured my parents for guitar. I got one from my grandmother at 13 and haven’t looked back since!
Andrew, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
The best way to explain myself personally is that I’m a nerdy father who loves music as a whole. There’s not much more to it than that. As far as The Mighty Fall goes, we are just 5 dudes who have a massive love for not only the product and songs we’re putting out, but the entire craft as a whole. Writing, production, booking and playing shows, video creation, future touring, anything and everything that our product entails. With that idea at the forefront of what we do, I think it gives us something that really does stand out in a room. We are able to go out and say with full confidence that we are doing exactly what we want, how we want it, and that shows through the way our songs are produced and how we are on stage with each other. Always fun. We aren’t doing it to fit in or cash in on a popular trend. We’re doing it because we love it and we want everyone else to feel that energy and have fun with us and the songs we write together. We may be a hardcore/metal band on the surface, but that’s who we are at the core and that’s what people should know about the 5 of us separately and as a band.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
I believe that one of the best things that people can do is to pay attention to the bottom of the ladder, if that makes sense. With bands, and music/art in general, everyone started at the bottom. There are so many people out there that are doing amazing things but because they aren’t showing up in bigger venues or they aren’t producing viral videos, they’re being overlooked. If people started to look at the bottom of the ladder and focus a little less on the top, they could possibly find their new favorite band, or artist, or content creator, or whatever the medium is. Not only that, but they can help that artist that they just found also succeed, bringing their product to other people who may have also just found their new favorite artist and it snowballs from there. Going to live shows is an experience like no other, however, there is something really special about playing in a small room that’s packed with fans or potential fans that you’re going to miss if you wait to for that band to just happen to show up on a tour date you’re going to. There are so many reasons why supporting local art is important but having that experience and helping that creator succeed in their dream, even subconsciously, is incredibly special. Go to local shows, buy merch from the bands, stream their songs, like their content, and always go for the opener. You never know who the next headliner might be.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
There are a couple of things driving my journey personally. The main one being my family. I would love to be able to succeed with our music not only because I am a musician and want to play music for a living, but I want that living to be able to support my family. No one loves working a 9-5, and if I had the ability to have my family be even a little bit free from that, and to do it with music would be the best thing in the world. The other goal for me is that I want to meet and play with my idols. In a previous question I had mentioned that Avenged Sevenfold was the reason I play guitar in the first place. I would LOVE to be able to say that I’m sharing the same stage as them some day. There are many others under that umbrella for me and the rest of the band but the idea that that could be possible is enough to drive me forward, I know the other guys have their own reasons as well but those would be my main reasons to push forward and be the best I can.
