We recently connected with Andrew Adly and have shared our conversation below.
Andrew, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear the backstory of how you established your own practice.
So I had decided to take the leap into practice ownership during COVID. Being a first time business owner at this time was very risky for the banks, so they gave me very little working capital but a great interest rate that we will probably never see again in our lifetime. I purchased an existing practice that had a small but loyal patient base with a doctor who cared about his patients/work so we had similar values in that regard. Unfortunately, this office was stuck in the 1980s so I immediately had to do a complete renovation and upgrade the technology (the office had paper charts and pink/yellow wallpaper for example). The bank only gave me $100k in working capital which sounds like a lot but before I saw a single patient I had to put in about $45k in construction and $35k in upgrades/technology, so 80% of my working capital was spent before I ever set foot into the practice (forget payroll, lab bills and other expenses). To top that off, the practice I was working for as an associate dentist fired me 2 weeks to the day from when I told them I was opening my own business with a 1 sentence termination letter given to me in an envelope by the office manager at the end of a productive day (my initial plan was to go part time at my office and part time exiting the one I was working at to continue making money as I was building up my office but that plan clearly went out the window).
So I really had my back against the wall and had to put 110% into my office right from day 1 otherwise I was going to be bankrupt quickly. It was a serious grind but I’m proud of the hard work I put in including all the blood, sweat and tears.
I wouldn’t change anything however because I made it work with the least ideal conditions so in the future I can expand with a hopefully easier route.
My advice to a young professional looking to start their own practice- DO IT! But, make sure you are 110% in it. It is far from easy and a lot more work for less glory than being an associate doctor at a busy practice. With that being said, the hard work is worth it when it’s all said and done and you can feel good that you established something in your name that was earned and not given.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Andrew Adly, owner of Monmouth Dental Arts. I am a general dentist who provides the full line of dental services including implants, Invisalign, veneers, sleep apnea treatments, gum surgery, oral surgery, crowns/bridges, fillings, and facial esthetics (Botox, dermal fillers, Kybella, PDO threadlifts) amongst other services. We strive to provide the highest quality care using the most state of the art techniques and technologies in order to help our community of patients. I am most proud of our staff and how much we focus on quality of care for our family of patients. Dentistry fuels my passion for art and science and I love that it allows us rewarding feelings including improving someone’s confidence/smile or helping someone in pain.
Other than training/knowledge, what do you think is most helpful for succeeding in your field?
Compassion is a necessary trait in our field. People often come to the dentist fearful and anxious, so it is important that we take a step back and understand why our patients have these feelings and learn how to help them the most comfortable manner.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Providing the best quality care and always trying your best. Patients put a lot of trust in us- yes we have the training and the knowledge but it is very important for us to plan and manage our treatments including complications with an exceptional level of empathy and integrity. Patients know when you truly care about them and want to do your best work, this should be second nature to a good clinician and not something that takes any thought or effort to accomplish.
