We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Andrew Abbott. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Andrew below.
Andrew, appreciate you joining us today. What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
When I was in second grade my parents decided to move our family from North Carolina to Nigeria. I don’t think it was the wrong choice to make because we all survived (narrowly). I and my three siblings all had bouts with malaria. Cobras, scorpions, and other dangerous animals were regularly spotted in the area we lived. My father contracted hepatitis but was misdiagnosed and as a result nearly died.

Andrew, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’ve always been interested in entertainment. I’ve always liked doing tricks on bikes, skateboards, etc. I’ve been juggling my whole life. Painting pictures is also a form of entertainment I’ve always been interested in. When I arrived to college I didn’t really know what I should study but my mother encouraged me to pursue art and I’ve been with it ever since, through thick and thin. I’m primarily focused on fine art paintings. I occasionally do commissions but prefer to paint what I feel and send the work to the galleries that represent me.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My main goal is to live as long as possible and continue to create my art. I know how lucky I am to exist. Humanity evolved from unicellular life over millions of years and I am here in this brief window of life experiencing it! It’s a miracle! But it’s not all fun and games! I want to stay healthy and stay alert so that my experience is good and I can help others with their experiences.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
When I was in my 20’s I was eager to have interesting experiences and I was also short of cash. I decided to join the ARMY. I was a combat medic attached to field artillery for four years. I think this experience was ultimately a good thing. I learned discipline and had many interesting experiences from which I can draw inspiration from.
