We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Andreux Micco a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Andreux, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I was probably around 10 years old when I started looking at fashion differently and began styling myself with going against fashion standards for young boys in the late 90s. I was allowed to get fashion magazines when I was 12 years old and asked my grandma to buy me certain items that I saw in magazines that young male models were wearing and began piecing items together with what was in my closet already. I remember asking for certain key items (a certain type of jacket a young male model was wearing but pairing it with what I had in my closet.) My grandparents encouraged me to continue on my fashion journey which ultimately led me to the world of fashion when I got to high school. I worked at Abercrombie and Fitch during my senior year and worked there for 5 years. It was at Abercrombie where I understood colors, tones, lighting, styling, optics and aesthetics from a huge brand at the height of their fame. Also, I was a male model so I got to see how on-set stylists use their ‘fashion eye’ and watching them use their talents to create the overall mood of the photo shoot, videos, etc. It was so eye opening to see how their brains worked and seeing their vision come to life gave me such inspiration to continue my fashion career till this day. I work in the beauty industry now through Sephora but I still have a burning passion for men’s styling.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I first got into the world of fashion & modeling when I was 18 years old. I went for a fashion show try-out for Seventeen Magazine in Kansas City and even participated in the dance competition & won! Right after getting off the runway, I was approached by two Abercrombie & Fitch recruiters who said I had a very beautiful look (I am half black and half Native American.) They liked my energy, smile and overall personality. I was offered a job and did some modeling for the brand. Working in the fashion world has taught me about aesthetics, optics, theme, business, etc. I have used all those skills from Abercrombie and took it with me into modeling and now into the world of beauty.
I have a unique perspective on beauty & style with a flair for incorporating celebrities as a way to bridge the client to understanding how fashion and beauty works in the world. They are always blown away at the `presentation` on how sell a product from a certain brand.
I want to reach an audience that wants to laugh, relate and have fun in the fashion and beauty industry which can be intimidating.
How did you build your audience on social media?
I started putting photos up on Instagram to show the fun night we had the night before! A way to appreciate my family and friends so that the memory can live on the internet. Why not? I want those memories on a platform that I can go back to & have fond memories of my time in college at the University of Kansas. I just kept posting my friends and selfies, it was then that I started putting photos of quotes up or whatever I wanted on my personal page. I eventually changed it to a lifestyle of what I think of myself as a socialite & It Boy in the entertainment and night life world.
I started noticing fashion people like models, photographers, editors, videographers began following me based on my content. I really saw an uproar of followers when I posted videos of me talking into the camera about my wild life, relationships with terrible guys, funny stories of going out, relatable stories of nostalgic past and anything that came to mind. People began DM:ing me saying how they loved how authentic and real I am with true transparency. I film all the talking videos of stories in one take and one take only. I don:t do edits or redos cause if it doesn’t land the first time, it ain’t gonna land the second time and be funny.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I would say my goal is to reach out to people who are wanting advice on anything from skincare to makeup to friendships or just wanting a laugh at my antics. I live my life like a TV sitcom and lean into the interesting shenanigans I get myself into yet laugh through it. Life is lived through rose-colored glasses from my perspective and find things work itself out without the drama or stress.
I want to have authentic conversations with people and give my most transparent self on the internet. The internet is very scary but can be a place that can bring people together in a fun way. Looking at life as though it’s a cocktail party in my eyes has always worked for me even if the cards are truly against me. I do not let anything get in my way nor take me down for fear of rejection or embarrassment. I find that if you make fun of yourself first and lean into the comedy of it all, it’s hard for people to say anything about you. That:s confidence.
