We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Andressa Da Silva a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Andressa, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
This mostly stemmed from spending my days reading and watching movies for hours on end as a child. Being an only child, it’s very easy to take up the attention of your parents and I did that exactly! I like to think that those behaviors translated into becoming an actor as I got older; I think all actors probably have that same mentality.
I think there wasn’t an “AHA!” moment that made me want to become an actor, I just remember being incredibly young-maybe 5 and thought to myself: “I want to see me on TV someday.”
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
From starting out in theatre as a child to learn the basics of acting, I continued in theatre all throughout high school and fell a bit out of love with theatre but have always been appreciative of the craft as it truly taught me the foundations I needed. I started acting in student films in college and developed enough of a resume that I was able to secure an agent out of college and am now a working actor in Atlanta.
I’m incredibly lucky that I am also a screenwriter and my current screenplay Lizard, is in the festival circuit and recently won Best Short Drama Screenplay at the GA Shorts Film Festival!
I like to think that being an actor and screenwriter set me apart a bit more because I feel when an actor is hyper-aware of another behind-the-scenes portion of production, it makes them a better actor and hopefully someone who is a bit more appreciative of what really goes into crafting a story.
As for my work, I love working in any type of production whether it be comedy, drama, or a dramedy.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect is knowing people love your work or remember seeing you. One of my earliest memories stems from a theatre production I did in 7th grade; I had to portray an old lady and I really threw myself into the monologue in order to really sell my performance and a peer of mine that came to see the play left a little ‘fan note’ for me to read and it made me want to keep going.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My particular goal is trying to get stories to the forefront that probably are passed over because the story might be too risky to tell. I’m also Brazilian, so maybe telling stories from abroad perspectives are another mission driving my journey because you don’t want to keep seeing the same old suburban housewife bored with her life story (not that some of those stories aren’t fun.)
Furthermore, I want to create a project that has a lasting impact on others and I always thought the best way of doing that, at least in my field, is writing your own content and making sure your screenplays are of substance.
